Evinrude E Tec motors

Hi there, I am looking at a Whaler with an E Tec motor. I was surprised to see that they are a two stroke. This one is a 2008. Are they a good motor?

Never owned one but E-Tec would have been my choise when re-powering if $$ hadn't been an issue. All I've heard about them is good.

I have a 2010 30 on my 1969 13 Sport. I love it. Starts in half a revolution, sips gas and oil, is quiet, and can run at trolling speed all day without loading up. It had an issue with a cracked oil tank but was fixed under warranty. Although it's a two-stroke it's a very modern design, and as clean or cleaner than most four-strokes. I'd love to buy one for my 16SL but not sure I can afford it at the moment.

The E-TEC is a great motor. While it is a 2 stroke, it is a modern design and has the benefits of low weight, strong acceleration, good fuel economy without the excessive smoke you see on traditional 2 stroke motors.
There are several really neat features including self winterization.

Great motor, it was the best thing i ever did for my 18 Outrage. I would drop one on my 13 if they made a SS with PT&T.

I have an ETEC on my 15 and unless they come up with something really industry changing I will never have anything else. It's quiet, great fuel consumption, barely uses any oil and pops out of the hole like none other that I have seen.

I have only had my new to me 2005 3.3 liter 200 Etec for part of one season. So far, it has met, or exceeded all expectations. Instant starts, perfect idling, no smoke, and snappy throttle response. I am sold on the Etec technology.

Thanks for your help. I did purchase the whaler, a Dauntless 160 from 2007 with a 50HP E Tec from 2008. It looks like a nice little boat.

Does anyone know of a boston whaler dealer that stocks etec motors rather than the merc in the NC area? It seems that all the package deals come with the Merc outboat.

They are fantastic motors The ETEC 150 I put on Das Boat has been one of the best things I did to my whaler. The dealer I got mine from is a whaler dealer in Va., and he sells mercs too. I would highly recommend ETECs to anyone wanting an engine. The merc I had was a good engine, the ETEC even better.

All new Boston Whalers come with Mercury engines. There is no other option.
You might find a non-Whaler dealer who would buy the motor at a discounted price but all the rigging would need to be changed. A very expensive decision.
The lack of engine choice has been a point of frustration for many prospective buyers over the years. Note that Boston Whaler is not the only builder who only offers one engine brand.

I'm considering getting a whaler without the engine if the price hit is not too bad and then go to an evinrude dealer for the install.

I guess they are the most developed outboard engines togheter with Merc Verado.
Etec is the right choise for old Whaler because of weight. Engines of the eightees were all lighter!
With Verado and Honda you may need to reposition all staff on board.

Interesting that the weight issue is brought up. When I check the defender web site comparring the etec with the Merc 40 hp, I see that the evinrude is at 250 lbs and the merc is at 227. Still I like the power and less maintenance issues with the 2 vs 4 stroke.
