gas tank 17' Montauk 1988

I just realized I have a Pate 24-gal fiberglass tank on my Montauk. This is the first time I put fuel in it. After I ran it for two hours, I brought it back home and started smelling gax? I don't see any leaks but smell for sure. I then read that fiberglass and ethanol in todays gas don't work. Your opinon?
Also, I've spotted a replacement tank-Moeller 24 gal. Is this a good replacement it that's what I need to do?

Yes, get rid of the Pate tank and replace it with the white 24 gal. Moeller. I did it this summer for my 87 Montauk and couldn't be happier. Looks clean and installed in no time.
Had mine shipped for free to a West Marine near me. Called them to order it and they matched the cheapest price I could find on the internet. Save a few bucks and do the same.

Several members have replaced their tank(s) with the newer 24 gallon white Moeller.

One more question, I looked up on West Marines web sight and I show two different 24 gal tanks. One says its for a Boston Whaler, the other does not. The price difference is roughly $200. Both are Moeller tanks. I then found one on another site for the price of the cheaper tank with the same picture as the one listed at West for the BW. It specifically states; Specifically desighned for use in BW Montauk 15's & 17's and it is $200 cheaper?

As far as I know Moeller only makes one 24 gallon tank.
The other is a 26 gallon which was also called a 27 gallon tank at one time.
Look at their tanks on their site.

This is the one you want, and where I purchased mine. About as cheap as I could find it online. ~$25 to ship it UPS.

I google searched prices and HC's link is very good. Defender has a good reputation.
West Marine has the nickname of "Theft Marine" for a reason. Their prices are ridiculously high.

I did the red Moller tank and fab'd a couple of mounts out of white poly board to elevate it 3/8 inch off the deck. If I would have know about the Pate tank problems a few years ago, I could have saved alot of headached with the carbs on the old 90. I think it's one of the best upgrade you can do.

You want the one for BW models. I made the mistake of buying the 26 Gallon red one and I have to slide the tank out to get to the fill port. When full my tank weighs close to 200 pounds and is not an easy thing to move in and out.

HC803 posted the correct link. I'd get the white 24 gal. tank that says for Boston Whaler. Defender does have great prices. You can order from them or have West Marine match the price and ship for free to your local store.
I placed mine on top of tan Dri-Dek squares. Don't have any pictures but will be pulling the boat back from the beach in January and will post pictures then. The tiles keep the tank off the deck and allow water and air to pass through, thus helping to prevent potential soft spots.
