Oil injection vs. Premix

Member Posts: 26 Comments: 0 Joined: 04/29/07	Would anyone suggest bypassing the oil injection system and just premixing the fuel in case of injection malfunction? I was also told to add approx. 2-3 oz. of oil into the 6gal. tank in case of malfunction. Any thoughts!?

Some people enjoy mixing oil with their fuel. Some people like to disconnect the air conditioning in their cars too. Personally, I would never disconnect the Oil Injection System as I hate mixing oil in the gas. Very few engines have failed due to the Oil Injection System going bad. I know, many mechanics always blame it on the system, but they rarely go bad. If you are worried about it, then have it checked out. I'm sure you will get other opinions, but you will never catch me disconnecting mine...

Member Posts: 11 Comments: 0 Joined: 06/29/06	jddr, I had the unfornate experience last summer of having oil injection system failure and ruining my 200 hp Merc. The shop I took it to said they get 20 to 30 every summer with similar failure that is terribly expensive for boaters. They rebuild on the condition that they remove the injection system as part of the rebuild. $5000 later, I now mix oil with my gas.

Member Personal Page Posts: 60 Comments: 0 Joined: 09/10/06	I used to have Yamaha motors with the auto injection. I now have old Mercury Inline Six motors that never had auto injection. Now that I have had to mix my oil manually, my feelings are that mixing the oil in the gas is no big deal at all, and if I was the slightest bit worried about the auto oiler failing, I would remove it. Mixing the oil manually is a piece of cake.

Member Personal Page Project Albums Posts: 233 Comments: 2 Joined: 09/30/06	I would never remove my VRO's. I believe the early VRO's had there problems but they were worked out long ago. I suspect many of the failures had to do more with carbon build up, dirty carbs and lean conditions (lack of maint.). I also believe premixing reduces overall range and 50:1 causes more smoke. My motors have over 1100hrs with VRO's and they run great.
