I was wondering if anyone has any concerns about mounting antenna on Montauk console and the effects of electromagnetic exposure.
The reason I ask is this. I just had my dealer install a VHF radio and new Shakespeare stainless whip. The radio is mounted just above the cup holders, flush mounted. The antenna is mounted on a stainless rail mount on the starboard side of the console.
This is something that never really ever occured to me to think about and I only became aware of it when I started to read the owners manual for the VHF radion this afternoon.
It states that the antenna should be located where it will be away from people. And in fact that it should be 3.5 meters above the deck in order to meet RF exposure compliance requirements.
The only way I think I could accomplish this would be to use an extension mast.
I've seen many, many Montauk antennas installed on the console. Is this requirement overkill? I also only seldomly use the radio for transmission purposes, but I do have kids on the boat.
I also have the same question. I got a new VHF radio and it talked about mounting the antenna 10 ft away from any person. I got a 8' shakespeare fiberglass antenna and was going to mount it on the console. I talked to the people at West Marine and they said it was kinda like the cell phone warning. But I don't really know. I would love some info on this, we also might have kids on board.
Thanks
