I am planning on repowering my '92 13' Sport and will be attempting to sell my current '92 Yamaha 40 ELRQ. In preparation for a possible sale I need to know the feasibiltiy of removing the engine myself (with the help of a few good friends).
I plan to have an outboard stand handy, but need to know if it is realistic/safe to remove by hand or if I should utilize an engine hoist. I believe the dry weight is around 150 lbs.
Does anyone have any experience/recommenations for removing an engine of this size?
Thanks for the words of encouragement! Hopefully once the bolts are removed we can then loosen the "hand tighten bolts" (not sure what they are called) enough to lift the outboard up by hand and place on the rack. This way I wont have to worry about securing a strap/chain to the engine anywhere.
I removed the 30HP Evinrude that came on my boat by myself, it wasn't all that hard. Drop the tongue down on the trailer, rolled the engine stand under the skeg and loosened the bolts. Raised the tongue so the outboard bracket had pretty much cleared the transom, then spun the engine around and a short lift onto the cross bar of the engine stand. Don't forget to block the wheels on the engine stand so it doesn't roll around until you want it too.
