Morse Contorls - tilt/trim control

My dad and I are restoring his '62 Nauset (his member name is MJB888 see his personal page for pics) and we are starting to figure out some of the finishes we'd like to include. One of which are Morse Controls. I believe he has already purchased a set of Morse controls but, think it may be the two knob type (black & red handles). Will that work on a single outboard? One for gear and the other for throttle?

Now regardless of single or double knobs, what can be done for power tilt trim control? For those of you who run Morse controls on for your single outboards what do you use for tilt/trim control? The obvious answer is some sort of toggle or rocker switch, but I'd like to have a 'classy' solution.

You didn't tell us which brand of engine you have, but I would assume the separte throttle/shift control would work. A combined single lever "red knob" MT-3 control would be superior, however, and more original. That's what Whaler used back then.

I have a twin engine Morse MT control on my boat, and it requires the installation of Mercury's separate Power Trim remote panels, about $75 each.. These are readily available, plug right in to the ignition harnesses, just like the switch-in-handles do. I would assume the other brands have such an option available also.

The round panels under the control are the trim rocker switches.

The Teleflex (Morse) MT-3 is the control you want.

Any two pole, double throw rocker switch can be used. You need one with Monetary ON positions, usually this configuration is abbreviated as (ON)-OFF-(ON).

I recommend you use a waterproof switch. I like ANCOR's Sealed Rocker Switch, part #554035 which costs less than $20. It is certified for prolonged submersion under pressure, so it should hold up well on a center console.

The face of the console is the easiest place to locate this switch but it is not a good position from an ergonomic standpoint. I do not like to take my hand off the control to make trim changes like we had to do in the old days. It is best to have the switch as near as it can be to the hand that operates the control. Consider placing the rocker switch just to the right of the control or just ahead of it so your hand can drop down to trim while still keeping your palm on the base of the control.

the motor we have now is an older (90s???) Yamaha 70hp.

Thanks for the model on the controls and switch. I'll have to think about location, as I'd like the aesthetic to be considered as well. I like your idea of locating in front of the controls.

I suppose we'll have to look for the MT3 controls and ditch the ones we've got.

I'd love to see some more pictures from you guys with the classics similar to ours. Morse MT3 and separate switch for motor T/T.

Nick -- Here is a photo of my brother in law's Outrage 21 III with its MT-3 control. The trim/tilt rocker switch is just below it on the face of the console, next to the ignition switch.

It looks better there because it is more discreet, but it would be safer and more useful if it were nearer the base of the control itself.

I installed dual controls on my 15 and I love it. I used the Teleflex MJB, installed it on a custom half round chunk of wood attached to the side rail. I recently added Trim and Tilt when I added the jack plate. I added a switch with a rubber boot on the top forward side of this block. See the control on my personal page.

For my TnT switch I have a momentary on-off-on toggle switch located just forward of the MT-3 control on the 1970 16' classic. This location allows me to feather the trim while still holding the throttle control and not taking my hands too far away from the helm. A rubber boot helps keep moisture out of unwanted areas.
