Would a 25 horse yamaha 2 stroke be enough for a 15ft whaler? Dont need to go fast but want to be able to put the boat up on plane. I relize this is at the low end for hsp rating. But want to stay lite and portable.

You'll be sorry putting that small of a motor on a 15'. Ya, it'll work with only one person on board and no equipment. Once you start putting more people and gear in the boat, it won't perform for you.

TIP:
It would have been best if you would have continued on with your other post. This way the basic question would be ongoing in one thread rather than spread it out so no one could find either of them very easily.

Here is your other thread.

I just installed a 30hp E-Tec on my 15 and I will have to say its not all that bad -- I gor 29 MPH(GPS) with a 13p ss prop running @ 5700 RPM with me and my 4year old daughter in the boat -- Hole shoot was good

I'm going to try a 15p prop this weekend

In the end, I don't think you will be happy with a 25. I have a 40 on a 15 and it is fine. Not to much when kids run it and just enough to get a 4 person crew going.

It will be a real dog with any kind of a load. If you look at my boat, I have a 4 stroke Merc on my 13'. It does great. This past Sunday, we had 5 adults of varying size in the boat. It got up on plane, but it took a looooooooooooooooooooooooooong time to do it. If it was me, I wouldn't put less than a 50 on it.

Aaron, if you can tell us what you're going to use the boat for, that would help. You really don't need 70 horsepower unless you have a lot of flat water to go fast in - the 15 is tough to keep on the water at high speeds in chop. 25 seems a bit low unless you're going to use the boat only in the harbor - I don't think you'll be able to stay on a plane in swells unless you have at least a 40.

I agree it seems low. My boat planes at 21/22 mph. I can go a little slower than that once it's on plane, but I find my self constantly adjusting the throttle to do so. Figure a top speed of 25mph. Even though 25hp is 5hp over the minimum hp raing I think you basically be limited to just running light loads.
