I have a 1993 40 hp on it now, I want to put a higher horse power on it. I do not want to for the speed. I go fishing in boynton beach, fl and have to go through a very dangerous inlet. the wave can be either flat or 5 foot caused by weekend warriors w/ the huge boats. My friend has a 70 hp yamaha and looks smaller than my 40 hp
any thoughts on this.
What year is your hull? If' you're going through that inlet, I'm sure you'll want the higher (20" ) transom for sure....to also accomodate the higher HP you're desiring.
I've seen 13' Whalers with 50's on them......and they haul the mail too. Personally, I wouldn't go higher than a 50hp on a 13'.
What size and type boat does your 70hp friend have?

If you don't want the higher horsepower for speed, why do you want more?
If performance/acceleration you should take a close look at propeller selection. Some props do better than others. It could be you need a prop with vent plugs or less pitch.
Please clarify what problem you are trying to solve so we can provide appropriate advice.
When I was a kid, a 40hp on a 13' was more than enough to get through that very same inlet. We used to run up and down the Intercoastal in 13's all the time like some wild children. I think a 40 is more than enough but then again I'm not in your shoes.
Instead of repowering that 13', why don't you consider a more capable vessel??
