I need a new engine on my 1986 18 ft outrage and see a 2006 johnson 150 for sale but it has a 25 inch shaft. The evinrude I'm replacing has a 20 inch shaft. Should I stick with the 20 inch shaft or is a 25 ok?

Your boat requires a 25" shaft.

really? That is good and bad. If I decide to rebuild what I have I will have a 20 inch shaft(i think, that is what the model number says) If I get this new engine I will be in good shape.

What is the model number on the Evinrude you are replacing?
If it has an X in the model number it is a 25 inch shaft.
L = 20 inch Long Shaft
X = 25 inch Xtra Long Shaft
XX = 30 inch Xtra Xtra Long Shaft
My model number is E150TXCO
The X again stands for 25 inch shaft
As Blackduck mentions above, the Outrage 18 takes a 25 inch shaft for a single motor installation.

I cannot find the model number on the engine itself but the title says e150glec. I cant remember if it is a C or G but it is definately a l and not an X.

Here is a chart so you can see what the model number means...
The G stands for Special Styling. I haven't seen that before.....
The L stands for 20 inch Long Shaft...
The EC is the year which is 1998
The 2006 model would have SD for the last letters....
I am surprised you don't have a T in the model number.
That stands for Trim & Tilt with Electric Start.... Does your motor have trim and tilt and electric start?

A picture of the transom will tell which engine shaft length,previous owners may have cut the transom so a 20" would work. I have seen this done a few times, not the best way to do it but, some get the saw in hand and well.... The engine maybe a Johnrude,or Rudejohn for that matter.

Now that I look at it, it does appear like work was done on the transom but i don't know if it was cut down or not. from the top of the transom to the lowest part of the hull(underneath the drain plug) is 25 inches. The "fin" on the lower unit just above the prop is level with the bottom of the hull at the deepest part of the V. Does that help at all in determining if the transome was cut down?

What is the story with a 2006 johnson 150? Does that motor have a good reputation and what do you thuink a fair price to pay for it would be? They "say" less than 400hrs. Also, there must be some value to the 1998 evinrude even with the bad cylinder. What do you figure I could get for it on ebay $500-1000?

yep, it looks just like that. I suspect when they repowered, the engine was a hodgepodge of parts because it does not have an engine sticker or tag on the bracket.
