Hello to all. I'm new to this site (first post). Long time small boat owner. Mainly fish Long Island Sound, CT resident. Keep my boat in Clinton, CT. I don't own a whaler yet, but they are high on my list of potential new boats. I have a ride scheduled in a 190 Montauk when the weather finally breaks and Birbarie Marine has a 19 in the water.
I'm looking for any comments on the handling qualities of the new 190 Montauk. The "mission" for the boat is to fish Long Island Sound, the boat will be kept in the water and I need good sea keeping abilities, a dry ride. Typical day is mid-sound fishing (it can be rough) - on better days the mission will be to fish Long Island - 15-20 miles, one way is required.
Obviously, a bigger boat would be better but I want a nice fuel efficent boat that is easy to clean/maintain. Maritime skiff is also on my list (but fit and finish is much nicer on BW).
The only real issue I have with the Montauk is the lack of a T-top (which I would eventually add). Also may add some canvas. Bimini top is NOT desireable.
I typically fish with one or 2 other anglers. Normal trip is 2/3 fisherman. Max. is 4 anglers.
Present boat is a 22 Hydrasport Ocen Skiff (good boat but getting old). I repowered 2 years ago and will not be "trading down" this year - maybe next.
The "package deal" with the 190 Montauk (new trailer) is very appealing to me.
I know some consider the 115 max. horsepower to be an issue but I'm not sure I agree.
Did not get my ride yet. I was busy working and getting my boat in the water for this season. I'll stop by next week. I think I saw the demo boat in the water at their marina. I'll post my impressions after the ride. Since I have my rig in the water it was probally best to get my ride after I get my "sea legs" back. This boat is high on my list of potential new boats, so a ride will be coming.
