Considering 18' Outrage with 1987 Engine - thoughts?

Looking at a 1987 18' Outrage with the original engine - 1987 Evinrude 150 (650 hrs per owner). We are a little concerned with the age of the engine, owner says it runs great. I've worked as a marine mechanic on larger diesel work boats but have little to no experience with larger outboards (over 10hp). Looking through the posts it looks like many Whalers are running good with 20+ year old motors.

1) What would you suggest before making an offer - run on the trailer, in the water test, run a compression test on the motor?

Boat is priced pretty reasonable - but re-powering changes that.

2) What are the thoughts on repairing a 1987 150 vs. repowering should the engine fail.
3) Beyond synching the carbs are there any outboard repairs \ maintenance tasks that are really should be done by a trained tech.

I realize I've got lot's of questions, will really appreciate any advice on this...

All three would be best especially if you read the thread that had the motor blow up during the test drive. Are you going twenty miles offshore or going in protected waters ? If you are going way offshore then a newer outboard would be your best bet unless you have maintained it for the last 25 yrs. jmo

I saw that one... it looks like a new motor in the 115 to 150 HP range runs about $7K + or - plus the install cost. We are in the upper Chesapeake bay area so offshore is not in our plans.

That price sounds optimistic for NEW power. Has the 87 been run in the salt alot? Hard to get them apart when run in the salt.

Chesaspeake bay is salt water alhough not heavy salt as there is a fair amount of fresh water coming into the upper bay.

I was using $7K as an optimistic baseline using some blowout 2 stroke prices I saw online (I really don't know if that market is realistic). New prices seem to run about $9K and it seems that the price is about the same for either 115 or 150hp - might be some motor deals at the Annapolis boat show (although I 'd rather not have to go down that road). I guess my main question is on the engine life for a well maintained 115 to 150hp outboard (hours or years).

We're looking for a dependable weekend fishing runabout, 3 - 4 hour fishing runs and short trips averaging 5 - 10 miles. I have an almost new 8hp Yamaha that the specs page says is an acceptable kicker for an 18' (it was too heavy for the dinghy davits on our other boat). The bay can turn nasty without much warning so fishing 20 or so miles from home in an 18' boat I'd like the security of Whaler.

Although I realize there is a big difference in boats, I'm using a new Carolina Skiff with a Suzuki 150 priced at $18K for comparison - basically a sanity check.

If the boat is solid, get the engine checked out. You want a compression check and all cylinders should be +- 10% if the engine has been maintained and run regularly. The 18 Outrage is a perfect boat for the Bay, your question is the engine. Take a ride, talk to the owner and then plan to repower in the future. The engine might last 20 more years, it might last 2, set aside some cash every month toward a repower and be happy every year you don't have too.

my motor on my Montauk is an 87, but the powerhead was replaced in 99 ... probably would not have bought it but the motor runs really well. you gotta run it no matter what all the tests say - nothing like an in-water test.

Good info, thanks for the responses... I saw a website that shows a power head for an 87' 150 runs a little over $3K with core exchange which seems pretty reasonable. Just trying to have a good idea of the total cost of ownership with an older Whaler.

My 86 90 hp still running strong and used in heavy salt all its life.

Great info - this boat has bottom paint on it so I'm pretty sure it lived in the water at some point. It's been trailer kept for at least a year. Would an 80's Whaler require a barrier coat or is the gel coat thick enough to protect it. From the other posts it looks unless there is physical hull damage any flotation saturation comes from above not below.

The 8hp Yamaha outboard I have is an 06' 4 stroke 15" shaft (about 90lbs). The spec page says it's an acceptable kicker motor for an 18' Whaler. Will 8hp be enough for trolling? I've seen some newer lift mounts that are pretty substantial and handle up to 150lb motors. From the kicker photos I've seen it looks like most are fixed mount, - is there a preferable way to mount a kicker?
