Service recommendation for 30 year old 70 hp Evinrude in Mass?

Hi,
Hope this is the proper forum for this question. I saw other recommendations here.
I'm looking for some recommendations for a good mechanic to service my 30 year old 70 hp Evinrude in Massachusetts.
I'm trying to prep my 30 year old whaler for sale. I ran the boat last summer for the first time in 10 years. It started up and ran great (on fresh gas) for a couple hours. But now it bogs down and won't go faster than a fast idle. I suspect I did it in with ethanol in the gas But I don't know. I've checked the screen on the side of the motor.
or are there other places on the motor I can check myself? I'm handy with a screw driver in a 2-steps-forward-1-step-back kind of way and I have the shop manual.

Just some things to check. Is the fuel tank clean with no rust or corrosion inside and the fuel tank vent unobstructed. Is the fuel line from tank to engine in good condition with no splits ,cracks or dry rot and the primer bulb good. If the fuel line is old replace it for safety reasons. Also check the fuel line connectors for a good tight leak free connection, sometimes the o rings inside the connector fail and they draw air into the fuel system. There are other things that could cause this problem, but this might give you some place to start. Good luck

Lance, if you are reasonably handy, the next step would be to rebuild the carbs and possibly replace the fuel filter and fuel lines. A carb repair kit costs around $30. It's not hard, but there are a lot of little parts to keep track of and you need a clean workspace. If you do decide you need help, try here: http://www.whalercentral.com/forum/vi...ad_id=7138
By the way, I hope you mean you have the OMC shop manual - the aftermarket ones are pretty useless.

There are two places I go A-Z boetworks in Scituate tel #781-545-6632 ask for Charlie and Monahans marine in Weymounth 781-335-2746 both have been there forever .

One of my fuel connectors had a bad o-ring. I discovered it when I was pumping the primer bulb...I could hear noise (air) coming from the connection at the engine.
Just replaced my fuel pump...I'd imagine that is something else that could be weak after 30 years.

thanks all... I replaced the old metal tanks with new plastic ones (and new hoses, bulbs and connectors) last year. So I don't think that's the issue but it's simple enough to check and so I will. It does seem like fuel starvation. I'll check the carbs for gum, etc. but I alway ran the motor out of gas whenever I was done with it. And then I think I'll take it to a mechanic as I'd also like to get a compression check in prep for resale. thanks for the advice so far.

Once you have the fuel thing figured out, I would look at replacing the water pump before really using the engine.

Since your original question was someone to repair an older outboard I would suggest Bruce @ Berwick marine in Bridgewater. he is getting ready to retire late this fall but I have used him faithfully for many years and your engine will run like a top when it comes back. Many other shops south of Boston won't even look at an outboard older than 5 years. Try Bruce now and see who he is sending his customers to when he retires would be my suggestion.
