I have nearly completed the repower of my boat from the old Suzukis to much new Evinrudes. Although I havn't sea trialed the 3.3 liter 200 HO Etec yet (tomorrow), that switch seems to have been completed without a hitch. The problem I am experiencing is the control connection to the new to me 1992 (if I remember correctly) electric start Evinrude 15.

My boat has a MT2 twin engine control box. The starboard side controls the main, the port side controls the kicker. I have used this arrangement for the past 6 years or so to control the 1992 Suzuki DT200 and the 1987 Suzuki DT15. The system worked flawlessly in that combination.

The problem seems to be that the throw of the throttle arm on the 15 Evinrude is much shorter than the action provided by the control. The throttle advances before a gear shift is accomplished, and once it is in gear, the motor is way above idle.

I am a little bit frazzled right now because time got away from me last night thinking all I have to do is get the cables adjusted correctly. I finally realized that I was going to have to give up for the night and go to bed, and I noticed that it was 4 AM. Yikes!

Am I missing something here or is the MT2 not compatible with the Evinrude 15? These control boxes are so universal, I can't imagine that to be the case, though my experience last night and this morning seems to indicate otherwise.

Help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Doug Vazquez

Upon further review, it seems that the problem could only be that I have the incorrect cable adapter at the engine end. I may try to modify one of the adapters.

Doug,
I just finished connecting my MT-2 up to a 120 hp evinrude, the MT-2 is configured such that when you go from nuetral to in gear either forward or reverse the throttle cable does not advance. The cable advances when you begin to accelerate once in gear. I believe your problem is in the connections at the control end and not the engine end. There was a barrel fitting that needed to be used for my evinrude application and not the traditional end of cable connector. There is a nice drawing of the control on the site and you can reverence part number # 4 and part # 26
26 is a cable terminal for the clutch and 4 is a cable terminal for the throttle, the previous owner used part # 4 for both and I could not get the thing to work correctly. Also part # 28 comes in a short and long version, I needed the short for the evinrude connection. Parts for these are hard to come by but best of luck.

Kevin,

Before I saw your post I modified the engine end cable adapter. I still have a little tweaking to do, but it works well. By the way, I could not see part #26 in the exploded diagram of the MT2.

Concerning the new to me Etec 200, 3.3 liter; I have had it out four times now, twice on inland water and twice in the Pacific Ocean salmon fishing. The Etec has performed flawlessly for us so far. It is amazing how well this machine runs. Turn the key...instant 500 RMP idle. At idle you can hear the tell tale stream splashing into the water, that's how quiet this motor is.

Running up swell, or down swell, set the throttle to a comfortable cruising speed to negotiate the wind chop and the speed stays exactly where you set it.

See pictures of the results of the new motor installation:
