While the earlier model years were rated for a maximum of 150 hp, the recent models are rated for 200 hp.

These days engine selection comes down to 4 decisions:

Price
Service
Technology (2 cycle DFI vs. 4 cycle)
Weight (ETEC tends to be lighter;Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha in the middle;Verado tends to be heavier)

What brands have dealers/service that are local to you?
Do you want high tech features or don't care?

My outrage is 2004. owners manual says it is rated for maximum engine weight of 510 lbs.
the fourstroke yamaha weighs 476 lbs.
As for dealers locally my choices are wide open, E-tech, Merc,Yamaha, Honda ect.

If it were me I would get written quotes from Honda, Yamaha and Evinrude. Make sure they list all the parts (harness, gauges, throttle etc), price of motor, prop, mounting, rigging seperately so you can compare.

Price alone could be your decision point.

cridge,

The weight you gave of 476 lbs. is for the 20 inch shaft version.
You would need to add a few pounds for the 25 inch shaft version.

So you have the original Nantucket 190.

Don't forget to add the weight of a stainless steel prop plus the 6 quarts of oil, about 10# or so if I remember correctly.

for less weight and better performance, plus a quieter motor at speed, look into the 150 Evinrude E-TEC.

I received a few estimates back, E-tech, Yamaha, Honda and Mec Verado. All 150's and all about equal. When all is said and done the best price is on the Merc Verado with the DTS system.
this is also the heaviest set up and runs right up to the max engine wheight of 510lbs. The Merc also has the best warrenty 5yrs
Any thoughts on the Verado with the digital throttle.

510 pounds for the 20 inch long shaft model. You would still need to add pounds for the 25 inch shaft version.
So, that would put you over the weight.

Also, the Verado 150 is only CARB 2 star rated so it is not as clean as the rest of the field that has CARB 3 star rating...

For the sake of other members considering a repower let me say I find it highly suspicious the prices are similar.

The Evinrude and Yamaha can use analog gauges and do not require DTS and hydraulic steering.

While I admire all three brands, the reports I have read are that the Mercury Verado is more expensive.

You will greatly increase the boat's value by installing the Mercury 150 Verado. That will bring the boat up to the current Outrage 190 standards, since that is the power most are being sold with. Everyone will think you have a brand new boat. It will outperform any of the other engines you are considering. Quiet and powerful, with fast acceleration from the supercharger.

Since your limited to 150 HP, my usual advice is to buy the dealer and not the engine. Hopefully with a new engine you will never need the dealer but it's nice to have one that you trust if you do. I know someone that repowered your same boat with a 150HP e-tec and is very happy with the results.
You will increase your enjoyment of the boat with a new engine the engine brand really doesn't matter.

Evinrude is running a repower special with a 5 year warranty plus up to $500 in parts. If you have specific questions about the E-Tech, just ask , i run a 175HP on my 1987 18 Outrage and I love the engine.
