My 1987 Yamaha 90 has a tube dangling underneath it around the trim & tilt pump. Looks like a pitot tube and I do have a speedometer on the console (which currently is inoperable while underway). The lower unit on my motor has been replaced, although I don't know how recently. Did the original lower unit have a place for a speedometer built in or did this just go to a speedo pickup on the transom?

The motor should have had a tube running up from the foot at some point. I think most all larger motors come with a speedo tube.

Yes. If you look closely at the front of your lower unit, you should see a small hole. That's where the built in pitot is located on the small Yamis.

If you have gps use it for speed. You can probably buy a Gps fixed mount or hand held for what someone would charge you to drop the foot. I have went as far as changing a water pump impeller in my 70 Yamaha but did not pay any attention to trying to get to the tube.

In that you already have a speedometer mounted on your console, try blowing through hole on the back to see if it is operable. If it is then you can install a pickup tube on the transom

The dangling tube by the trim and tilt is the other end of the small hole on the front of your lower unit. If you can blow through it all you need to do is run tubing from the dangling tube to the speedometer in the console. Done, speedometer hooked up.

Good luck,
Rick
