I just wanted to report that I have re powered my 1982 13 sport with a 2011 Yamaha F40 EFI. This engine must be the quietest engine ever made. You cannot hear it at all when idling and when at WOT you hear the water hitting the hull more that the engine. I am sooooo happy with this engine, It gets on plane with 6 adults, one baby, two coolers and 15 gallons of gas. That is definitely overloaded but it is how we always run. If anyone has an other questions about the re power please feel free to ask. I am running the Yamaha prop 6H5-45958-00-EL which is 10 1/4x 14 and am running it in the third mounting hole down. This allows the cavitation plate to be just above the bottom of the boat. Also the weight of the engine is NOT a problem.

So how does the weight compare to the former 35 you had in it? Did you find a good price on the 40?

The 35 I had on there weighed in at about 120 and the new one is about 100#'s heavyer but I would never know it. I can go from full speed to stopped without worrying about water coming over the back so that is all I am worried about. I guess guys with a lot of water in their hulls may have an issue. It was $5500 out the door with controlls, cables and prop from Reynolds marine in Hamburg Cove, CT. They are about 20 minutes south of me so they are very close and were the cheapest price I could find. Also VERY nice people to deal with. I also got the tach which is a bit pricey but worth the money since it also has an hour meter, trim guage and oil/ temp lights.

I suggest considering Tohatsu 2 stroke 50 h.p. with much less weight.

mreid99- If you are looking for an engine and dont have a transom adaptor to make your transom a 20" then you will need to go with an engine like the Tohatsu. Here is a link to the Tohatsu page that has all of the specs and MSRP.

Frankly I will never go back to a loud and 2stroke. The ability to have a conversation at any speed is priceless, especially on a small boat like a 13 whaler.
I am not saying that the Tohatsu is a bad engine but it is not cheap by any means.

Looking at that weight it's not much difference and an added cost of raising the transom. Never considered the noise factor, good point.

I agree with Brooksinct about the 4 strokes, I doubt I'll ever have another 2 stroke. Mercury makes a 40 hp 4 stroke with a 15" shaft:

Try not to lump all 2 strokes together. The Evinrude Etec engines are 2 stroke DI, and are quiet, economical, have more power mid band, and cleaner emissions than a 4 stroke.

Nothing against the 4 strokes, and not looking to start a debate. Fact is that all new engines today are pretty great if you're fortunate enough to get one, and a big improvement over the old carbureted 2 strokes in many ways.

A buddy of mine had a 2004 40 HP Yamaha 2 stroke on his 13' and it was very quiet IMO.

My '93 is pretty darn loud!!

I would say to go walk around a couple marinas and see if you can find someone with a new 4 stroke that will take you for a ride or atleast start it up for you. I have heard the etec and they are quite but not like this. Like everyone says, anything new is a world away from even a 10 year old engine.

Not doubting you at all Brooks.

A buddy of mine has twin 150 HP 4 stroke Yamahas on his 25' outrage and you can barely hear them run. In fact at idle my single 40hp is louder than his twin 150's.

There's no disputing how quite the 4 strokers are.

Brooks, nice boat and nice family! Nothing like growing up boating.

I put an F70 on my 15 last fall and I'm very happy with it - it's so quiet that I can hear the classic two-stroke gang muttering about how all 4-strokes are heavy and slow:-).

More seriously, you hit the nail on the head with your comment about being able to converse at any speed. Between that and the lack of smell, my wife will actually come boating with me now! And the mileage is much improved, as measured by my very scientific "how long does it take my teenager to run through a tank" test - used to be 1 day or less, now it's 3 or 4.

Ten years ago I had a 17' Montauk with a 90 two stroke Evinrude on it. Our friends had a 17' Sea Hunt with a four stroke Yamaha on it. I hated to slalom ski behind their boat, it took so long to pull me up, I was too tired to cut back and forth.

My 2011 four stroke Merc has a lot of torque, and comes out of the water really fast. I think the four strokes have come along way, and have overcome a lot of the issues that they first had.
