I am about to buy a 17 Montauk that needs engine and electrical work, how much would it cost to make a boat that is out of order into a well running and cosmetically pretty boat. I know I dont have any details about what im starting with but does anyone have any idea how much it will take to fix one up? Aldo where can I get all the parts I need, such as a railing electrical, seating etc.
Yup you are right more info would be A LOT of help. First where are you located? I am going to figure you are in the US? Also are you looking to return the boat to OEM...
figure worst case no less than $3000 to get an old dead motor up and running or, you could find a newer used motor for about that price. New motor add rigging and possible new controls. If you are rebuilding the powerhead replace the control cables....$200
From your post looks like you are going to need railing...Figure $500 - $700 depending on whether you want both side and bow rails.
All the wiring and misc needs will add up VERY fast and it is easy to drop $200 - $300+ to completely rewire the boat.
Looks like you will need seats...$500 - $1000 will get you a good to really nice leaning post or you could order a new RPS from whaler at a price of $1400.
If the gel coat is just oxidized and there are no blisters, crazing, or major cracks or scratches you will just need to wet sand and polish out the hull. You are looking at $50 - $75 for the sand paper and wax. If you do not have a power buffer...Get one $150
If there is need to do lots of fixing of cracks and patching needed you could spend $100 - $200++ in gel coat, epoxy, filler, etc, etc....Do you have a sprayer? No, well throw another $100 if you have a compressor to run the gun if not well there is another $400+ for a compressor.
Do you need a new windshield...$175 + hardware
Does it have bottom paint? Are going to strip it off...$100+ in stripper and supplies...Re paint you are looking at $150 in paint....
Are the fuel tanks in working order and not full of water and sludge? If not there is another couple hundred....
New fuel lines $50....Fittings $35
New fuel water separator...$75+
Dock lines and achor $100 - $200
Life jackets....$75
Flares....$45
Etc....
All of these prices do not include shipping if you have to mail order. Also, all of the prices do not include labor. If you are not going to be doing it yourself add at least 25%.... If you are planning on doing it yourself in your spare time. Take what you think it will you to finish the project and multiply it by 2.5....Now you might be closer
Boats are not cheap to own, restore, anything.....Buying a project boat is a lot of work and a good portion never end up getting finished and end up back for sale. After going through a project it is crazy how fast the money is gone with much less progress than hoped.
Well if I am going to fix this right I should redo this thing and buy a new one of these....Etc. Etc...
If you can not afford the time nor investment of finances buy a boat that is already in good working order. It will be worth it's weight in gold... Sorry if it looks bad but really knowing what you are walking into helps.

Wife's happy & we can talk, fish, get out of the shade, have a cold brew, & spend as much time as we can on the water in a classic Montauk.

Jeff, You r on the money with the costs. I refuse to add it up. I have a list as long as my arm in needs and wants I put on my 84 Montauk. I thank you all for helping me spend my money. I wasted some before I came here to this site.
I do love that boat more and more every day. I work on it every day and I am still a long way from powering up and going out on the water. Ive been working since November 06 in a heated garrage. I powered up the electrical last night and I was so exited I could not sleep.
My boat was in good shape when I purchased it. That sentence can produce a lot of debate. This iteration of restore / make ready for use gets me started. I have made another list of things to do over the 07/08 winter.
You must be prepared to spend to completion and then spend more. This includes time and money as Jeff pointed out.
BOAT - But Only Another Thousand. It's true!
I think the time and money is well worth it. I wanted this boat for 25 years. I now have it and I will complete it.
