I just found a listing for a 1984 17' Newport that has been in storage for a few years, I have not even seen pics yet. The current, and original, owner claims the 90hp Yamaha has very, very low hours. if this is true, what are the pros and cons? Is it better for an engine to be run and have higher hours or sitting and getting it with low hours but have it not been run for a few years??
What do you all know about these 90 Yamaha's that BW used in 1984? If it is original to the boat...
A lot will depend on the price. Find out what steps he took before it went into storage. I would make sure all of the fuel lines are inspected thoroughly. Carbs will probably need a good cleaning. Get a good full inspection of the motor before you head out to sea.
I would be more concerned if the motor was used in salt water and not properly stored. It is a 50/50 chance being in Mass. that it was a salt water motor so I would want a competent mechanic to check it over.
My 90 HP is a 1984 Evinrude only ever in fresh water and so far no real corrosion issues I have found other than the tilt tube. It was put up for storage properly but it was outside where critters built mud nests and invaded many of the openings. A good cleaning and inspection is in order before you can depend on it. Milky fluid in the lower unit might be cause for some concern and fuel lines and filters will likely need replacing. I would certainly change the impeller or complete water pump assembly as the rubber tends to take a set and becomes brittle.
