Last night I took our kids tubing on our new used 17 Montauk. Going to the tubing site I ran it at wide open throttle. After tubing for a while I hit a wake which slammed the boat a bit and right after that the engine would only run at about 1/2 throttle even though the throttle was pushed all the way forward. The VRO pump was just replaced and my guess is that E10 caused something to break down and something got stuck in a jet. The vent is open on the tank and there is fresh gas.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Michael

First things first, visually check your throttle linkage, cable, and fittings. Is the carburetor opening up fully and does the spark advance plate move smoothly when you have someone move the throttle lever from idle to wide open?
Is the fuel hose connector attached fully to the motor and to the tank?

Thanks for the reply.
I checked the throttle linkage cable and fittings and they all look to be moving correctly when I disengage the throttle lever from idle to wide open. The fuel line is attached correctly... that triangular shaped plate with the groove in the middle of it (spark advance plate?) seems to move through the full range of the groove.
I'm going to check the condition of the fuel filter because I don't think the previous owner did much maintenance.
Other than that I think it might be something in the carb or blockage some where....

" E10 caused something to break down and something got stuck in a jet." I would think it is the high speed jet. CArb cleaning would be in order. That would be my guess.BG

Thanks Barry that sounds like a possibility but it seems Seahorse had the right idea. I double check the connector to the tank and it had come loose from the few waves I hit.
I connected it and it was good as it was before.
Thanks for the time and help.

nice, I had the same problem. but it was the throttle linkage. the rubber housing that goes into the outboard cover came loose and i was just pulling the rubber housing out and not the throttle assembly
