Just bought an '87 Montauk in excellent condition. Former owner put stainless gas tank in center console. I would like to remove and replace. Any suggestions for tank/tanks.

I don't have a Montauk. But years ago we had a Nauset and had an 18 gallon tank made to fit under the pilot seat. It was a nice addition.
For many reasons I don't think I'd want the gas tank in the console. The primary reason is that the console is a reasonably well contained space with open electrical connections in it. Not too safe a place for flammable liquid storage storage or refueling.
I have read a couple of articles about a larger tank manufactured by Pate Plastics.
Here is one thread on Jim Hebert's Whaler Forum that was started by the fellow who wrote a very nicely detailed article about the installation of one of these tanks on a Montauk:

Here is the article that the above thread references:

OSEADEE,
Although the Pate is a very nice tank, they are not cheap.
I always preferred 2, 12 gallon tanks in my Montauk. When one tank is empty, you still have the other tank to get home on.
Bass Pro has the best prices on Tempo 12 gallon tanks. Item number "B" below which are $45 each.

I have an '87 Montauk that I bought 2 years. It came with twin 6 gallon tanks under the RPS.
I replaced them with a used 28 gallon tempo tank (basspro.com for ~$100) from a forum member.
While I like the tempo, I totally agree that the twins are great. If I have an issue with the tempo tank, will reinstall the twins.
Invest in new metal twin tanks. You will not be sorry. See "Out of Water It" page for photo of the tempo tank.
Congrats on getting a fantastic boat!

I have to agree with Joe here. My father Has twin 12 gallon metal tempo tanks. I much prefer these to a large single because when the first runs out is serves as a warning that you better turn around if you want to make it home. The problem is I have never seen these metal tempo tanks forsale anywhere.

I have the 12 gallon Tempo's (plastic) on my Montauk and I like them. However they are a half inch too tall in the gas cap area and only fit under my RPS one way. This is not a big deal to me because I am gong to raise my RPS two inches this winter anyways
