I bought a marine mechanic book for my Johnson in an effort to help me with the wiring harness. Well, I just put my Engine back on my boat after painting and I was wondering if anyone had a printout or pamplet online or either for sale that shows what wires go where? Ill be hooking up:

1. ingnition on off choke switch
2. throttle
3. a fuse panel under console
3. ectt, sure there are other things im missing

In the thread just below this one titled Evinrude diagram, follow the links there and you should have your answer.

I think this is the portion that only applies to me. The rest of the document is about upgrading a older wiring harness to a newer wiring harness for the sake of system check. This is all the wires of an older harness correct?

1. Ground (Black) This wire has changed slightly in the new system... now Black w/white stripe..
2. Magneto (Black w/yellow stripe)
3. Accessory (Purple)
4. Primer (Purple w/white stripe) (push to choke)
5. Start (Yellow w/red stripe)
6. Battery (Red w/purple stripe)
7. Gray wire (tach pulse)
8. Tan wire (to warning horn)

Kyle,

What engine harness do you have?
One with the big Red Plug?

Your engine is 1997 and should have the newer engine harness with the Deutsch connectors and System Check.
From that same article you link to above, your harness should look like this.

Let us know what harness you have.

Yes, your diagram is my harness. The last link you sent. Sorry for the silly question but why isnt there any visual for the other side of the plugs? Like the plug "to ignition" has a female or male then strands of colored wire coming off right?

The newer engine harness just plugs into the other modular components like key switch, system check gauge or tach, etc...
I did put the description and color of most the wires which weren't there on the original drawing from BRP.

What seems to be your concern.
This connectors should just connect up to what you have unless you are trying to cross convert older with newer.

Seahorse,

Those are nice drawings showing the colors.
I show the colors in the article but these are better.
I might add a description on which wires go where for better clarification like I did on my original drawing.

My article shows this for wire totals.
The old harness has a total of 12 wires, counting the trim harness wires, from the engine to the dash panel.
The newer System Check harness, which now includes the trim wires, has a total of 15 wires in the harness.
There is a little tricky business with some splices in the harness but essentially, 15 wires total.

I have a complete harness of both types I took apart to see what wires went where. I have never been able to put the "tricky business" in the wiring harness into words but your diagram shows why there are 15 wires in the main harness and 25 wires coming out the other end.
As the drawing best explains, some of these wires are just jumpers from some others.

Maybe something like the attachment below in case people have trouble seeing colors.

Thanks for the drawings seahorse.

I am doing the same thing with the Key Switch and Neutral Safety Switch.

I updated the article to show the first drawing. When I get some more time I will add the key switch drawing.

What does MWS stand for?
