Fresh or salt water motor? Fresh probably ok, salt could be a beast.
Will need to pull powerhead to change them in any event

Don't know really. Doing it yourself or take it in to a service center? How many years of salt water use? Your engine is approx 36 years old, so no telling how many bolts are seized tight and take an hour to remove.
Having said that I have done this procedure several times. In can be done, but not always pretty. I would guess about 5 hours time if you know what you are doing and have an array of tools to handle any issues that come up.

Check the screws on the rubber motor mounts ( under motor cover ). I seem to remeber having the same issue with a 1981 70hp Johnson.

Does it vibrate when idling or cruising?
The motor mounts are supposed to absorb the vibration.

thanks for all the reply's the motor runs great and does not vibrate at all if any only when starting. the motor is very smooth and i can not tell any differnence in performence or steering than before. i have had the boat and motor for 20 years, i am just concerned about any damage it may incur if i dont fix right away.
i am very easy on the throttle and the power trim i am just not wanting to hurt a good motor.
thanks
