Help me decide on a new (used) engine for my 1981 15' Whaler
I've been browsing the classifieds for a used engine for my whaler. I am looking to spend around $3000 for a 60/70 HP, 2000 or newer engine. At first I was looking at only 2 stroke Yamaha 70's but then I read about the 4 stroke Yamaha 60 (in the 2006 range). I also came across a 2005 Mercury 60 4 stroke. Reliability is key, followed by performance (a lot of skiing will be done with this boat) and then efficiency. After I realized a decent 4 stroke was in my price range I really began to like the thought of a quiet engine but I don't know how they are in terms of reliability/performance. In your opinion, what are your 3-4 favorite engines for a 15' Whaler that can be found for around $3,000 used?

1981 15' Custom powered by 2005 Yamaha F60
I've a 60 hp Mercury 4 stroke from 2004 on my 15".
It's a very good engine for the boat, the max speed i got was 33 knots with lot of fishing stuff on and my 85 kilos!!
Very nice for fuel saving ( 7 lt/hours at 15 knots) and veriy silent for fishing.
Best Regards
Luca
Any 50 to 70 HP outboard will be great on that boat.
I cannot think of a motor in that power range made in the last 15 years that would not be suitable with the possible exception of the first generation Suzuki DF70 which weighed a bit too much for the 15, though we had neighbors with a Sport 15 rigged exactly so it they had a lot of fun with that quiet, smoke free DF70 for years and years.
