Too much transom weight?

Member Posts: 9 Comments: 1 Joined: 08/05/06	Cheers! I have a 1975 Montauk with a BEAUTIFUL 1963 Merc 1000 "Tower of Power" hanging off of a Panther 135 6" setback tilt. That's a lot of weight! I'm killing myself worring about adding a kicker. I have a sweet running 1977 7.5 Mercury and think that may be putting too much to the transom. I had a 4hp with internal tank merc kicker on the back of or 84 Montauk which had a Mariner (merc) 90hp tower of power. Never had a problem. Here's a picture of the 1000 and 7.5 together. The 7.5 had a 5" extension kit installed today taking it from 20" to 25". They seem fine and sturdy on the trailer not being slammed by waves. Even with that there can be no guarantees, just best guesses. Are there any signs of damage to the transom? Any signs of stress or water intrusion there? What you are worried about is a common concern. If your boat is well cared for with no transom damage, as I suspect it is given the obvious care given your motors, then go ahead. We had a 1974 Nauset that at times had anywhere from 70 - 100 hp main motors (Evinrude & Johnson) and always had a 9.9 hp kicker on it. No problems. The only trouble we had with the kicker being mounted on the transom was having it stolen. Mike

There seems to be a misconception that maximum transom weight ratings have something to do with the strength of the transom. They do not. They have to do with how the boat floats and the center of gravity which affects its performance. A single modern four stroke weighs as much as what you have there. Don't worry, go have fun.

There is a member here who has a big 115 4 Stroke Merc (quite heavy) on the back of a Montauk. Im sure you will be just fine. Those older Merc towers were quite light for their size. Demps, The kicker is actually a 1977-78 I just made a custom decal kit to match the '63. That's actually what I do - make signs. I'm putting a page together now showing the re-vitalization of a '69 Sakonnet and this one - a '75 Montauk. No pics yet, mostly sources. http://WhalerSailor.com Thanks again everybody.
