Hi all, I have 1984 75 hp Johnson, 2 stroke. I have run the motor a few times and runs fine. On my last trip, the following day I noticed a Black drip under my prop. Any idea what the cause is? Could it be a inproper oil/gas mix? I know I was about half gallon of gas short of a good mix on the last trip.

Also, when I bump the engine I gear, it dies. I think I need to raise the idle. What is the correct rpm in neutral and in forward? Thanks

A couple things come to mind. First, the black slug that you're seeing is normal and a result of the oil in your fuel not completely burning while running.

Your idle problem could be as simple as having carbs that need to be cleaned. I'd try running some SeaFoam in your fuel and see how that works for ya.

Funny you say that, this was actually the first time I ran a full can of SeaFoam in the gas, 16 oz for about 18 gallons. I originally thought it was liquid carbon dripping out.

The engine stalling when I bump it into gear was an issue that existed before I ran the SeaFoam. I'll try to run it again and see what happens.

Worse comes to worse, you might be due a carb rebuild. I rebuilt my carbs in '08 and it was quite easy. Dewrd on this site really helped me out big time with links to instructional YouTube videos.

Oh, and you're probably correct concerning your carbon drip. Without seeing the goop, I making a guess by saying that what you see is a result of running SeaFoam.

I'm guessing it's time to replace some seals in your lower unit. Sometimes fishing line will get pulled in between the prop and seal slowly eating the seal up with continued use.
Pull your prop off and see if the drip is coming from around the shaft where enters the seal.

Does the disharge feel oily??

To me, it's acting just like what my motor did when I decarboned it a few years back. Could be the lower unit oil however in my opinion looks to dark for that. Just to rule out the shaft seals, you might want to check your lower unit oil and see if it is milky in appearance (water intrusion). If it is milked, ya you have shaft seal problems.

CES - well - no more drip. I added some more gas, with a little less oil (last time I was about a 1/2 gallon short of gas when I mixed and knew I had extra oil in the mix).

So I am guessing it was the unburnt oil and possible seafoam carbon drip we were talking about.

The engine still died when dropping into gear - so I still have to figure out the idle settings. It is an older motor, looks to read about 900 to 1000 rpm at idle and drops to 750 in gear - but rough.

I'll run the motor some more and possibly start another post to help troubleshoot that one.

Thanks again !!

CES - you were right. I needed to have the carbs rebuilt. Fuel was dumping from the carbs. I was basically running on 2 cylinders. Runs fine now. Thanks for the help!
