i bought a 1995 21 ft outrage with a 225 ocean pro motor last July 2010, The hour meter has 139 hours.
I managed to fix 10 problems with motor. Carbs were a mess/ link syn was out\ dirt dobber clogged the starboard head/ anti-siphon was clogged/ voltage reg inop / tachometer and voltage gauges bad/ to name a few....but i have finally got it running smoothly.

problem: at WOT with SST 14.5x 19 prop I get rpms 5200-5300 and speed of approx. 44 mph by speedometer trimmed up (I have gps but failed to take it with me on test run) ....

3600 lbs total weight.....
with 60 gals of fuel/ 2ea. 250 lb. passengers / 2 ea 60lb batteries, boat 2500 lbs. motor 450 lbs.)

Motor is 2 holes up position. / 1.5 in. off transom./ 30 in. motor shaft.

I would like to try and get rpms at 5800-6000 get max speed and fuel efficiency if possible. (an actual normal load would be almost twice this amount of weight.) another person /ice / tackle / full of fuel.

the motor seems to run smoothly and have good power... hole shot is very slow... even trimmed under.

I wondered in 15 Rebel or 15 Mirage would fix this?

I don't think a 17 viper would be the best answer since it is similar to the SST...

which would you recommend ????

any other ideas/props would be appreciated.....

thanks,

rthomas

any help would be appreciated.

Something is still wrong with that motor...and/or the boat is VERY overweight.

It should do over 50 MPH with the 225 Ocean Pro.

The 14-1/2" X 19" SST is a fine prop for it.

tom thanks for info

before changing prop i still may have motor trouble

i went fishing today on 35 mile trip and it was rough 28-30 mph, ran good, but died at idle as it did before carb job.

when i finished carbs last year i tested and thought it was running 5800 and 48-49 mph with just me in boat
lite load and 25 gallons of gas....

i will go thru carbs again and see if i find anything...

thanks again...

Make sure it's firing on all six. A V-6 running on only five cylinders will run amazingly smoothly.

i don't want to sound too dumb... but do you know a special way of testing for all cylinders firing...

when i stand in the water next to the motor and pulling off plug wires, it lights me up pretty bad....

when i checked wires with timing light i get fire on all wires to the plugs, (plugs were new)
at least that is how i checked last time...i checked each coil and they read the same.....

before i bought the boat, it had set up for 3-5 years mostly in a storage shed/rack...then mechanic put in some fresh gas with the old....to make it run for sale....

when i test drove it.. it was running on 4 cyls.... about 30 mph wide open...
I found they had adjusted the shifter/throttle linkage to compensate and make it idle .... but it would die....

.then i made offer and bought boat...and started the repair....

when i got it...
I had a totally clogged gold tube on one carb and some of the ports on the aluminium block that the carbs mount to were full of carbon or something... after cleaning the boat seemed to run like a scalded dog.... but then i still had a fuel restriction with the anti siphon value 1/2 clogged.... I removed that completely (any problem with that? accept if i have a boat fire?) (could that be causing a lack of fuel problem...the bulb seems full)

i guess some more ethanol gas clogged carbs again....

again thanks for all the help...any and all advice has been greatly appreciated....

PS i know you can't troubleshoot a motor over the internet, but it is helpful to give you all the things that it is doing...to make an intelligent call...

Yesterday.. i had the alarm...it beeped at me... a one second beep while idling.... it happened 3 times...
(the oil tank was 3/4 full/ the water was shooting out the pee tube, cool/ new primer bulb relatively full 90% /not flat at all, you could squeeze it half pump but should have been plenty of gas for idle)

the only thing I could think of was a weak motor fuel pump alarm.... any thoughts....

Sounds like you've determined you're firing on all six. I'd clean those carbs again, especially those high speed jets.

Did anyone ever do a compression test on the engine at any point that you know of? Always a good baseline to start with.

And when was the last time the fuel lines were changed. Older ones are very vulnerable to ethanol and will degrade internally, sending debris to the filter and carbs.

You can use a spark tester to check the strength of the spark on each cylinder. There are two types in the short money category, the first below is an adjustable gap type and the second one has an internal light. I like the first one as you can set the gap wide ( 1/4" ) and check each cyl, then decrease it and get a better sense for which cyl's are firing strong and which are weak. If you do it in good shade or at night, you may also be able to see other high voitage leakage spots as blue light.

I talked to the Old Johnson dealer today.

his thoughts were having stuck timing advance.... i checked it it was free.

I will do a compression test this weekend and report back and do spark check with spark gap tester...

Also the fuel lines are original 1995... i will replace them...don't find anything in fuel filter (spin on) or the one under the fuel pump on motor ... both are clean...only three minor water drops in spin on...

Plan on cleaning carbs tomorrow weather permitting...

the fueline was wrapped in the control bundle...the bulb was in the horizontal position...does this need to be vertical with fuel flow in a specific direction???

thanks for the help

If you haven't already checked... Pull the crankcase fitting hose off of the V.R.O/ fuel pump and squeeze the primer bulb. If fuel leaks out of that hose/fitting, the fuel pump is your problem. I have seen many air motor diaphragms cracked with the E-10 fuel causing fuel to leak into the crankcase. Which would explain your rough idle and lack of high RPMs as well.

It is an easy check to rule out that problem anyway.
Good luck and let us know...

thanks for the quick replies:

i typed up a 30 minute message/reply and my internet service timed out and i lost it...

I am glad i made someones day... when you get hit by the voltage off those coils... you jump....
I can laugh at it now....

thanks for info on pump ... i will try that...

thanks to Tom and his help on the high speed jets... I cleaned them today and the motor seems to be working much better , but haven't done a water test, will do that Monday....
I have to work driving a boat Sat and Sun... my sons 27th Birthday he wants off...

the motor seems to be running so good..
i.e. it has to be on 6 cyl...
I should have done the compression test along time ago...
I didn't have any one to help do the test today
nor the spark...

but i cleaned carbs today again and found high speed jets very dirty... pipe cleaner didn't touch them
so i soaked them and got them clean...

retirement life is so much fun....

I will let you know what results are from all your helpful fixes...

thanks

I took my boat out today... after cleaning high speed jets .... it turned 5700 rpms and 47 mph gps
vice 5300 before the cleaning... 2 people in the boat, 40 gallons of gas....I would call this a lite load...

It didn't surge, ran smooth....bulb stayed full....
this is closer to what it should turn....5700-6000 with 14 1/2 x 19 prop...

however, idle still not great/ 650 rpms in gear and burping once per 30 seconds.
I did not put the hose off fuel pump yet... i will tomorrow and check for a leak.

Wednesday/thursday are free:
I ordered the spark tester
I will check the compression
i will pull the hose off the pump and see if it leaks...

checking these things won't hurt...

thanks for the help

Always good to eliminate as many variables as possible. When you pull the plugs to do the compression check, take a close look at them as they can sometimes tell you what's going on. (do a Google search for reading spark plugs, 2 stroke, outboard, etc and take a look at some pic's) And while out, make sure they're clean and gapped correctly, one more thing eliminated.
