So I found this beautiful 1971 NEW condition 6hp motor. Immaculate and a steal at $250.00.
In my haste to combine my two favorite things, saving money and boats, I didn't check to see if it was a short or long shaft.
Got it home and ran the model number 6R-71G and noticed the 'L' was absent from the number.
Interestingly the measured shaft length from cavatation plate to transom mount is 18".
Question is should I resell this motor and look for an actual "long shaft" or will this shorter shaft model work on my 17 Montauk for trolling about Long Island Sound?
Thanks
You can always mount the motor on a tip down axillary motor bracket.
Another option if you really do like your 1971 is to find a long shaft model that might be toast and switch some parts. A lot of those smaller motors use the same lower units and the spacer year after year.
I have a 6HP Evinrude of that vintage and the motor is a dream and nearly bullet proof.
