Hi All,
I wanted to know if I should put a 40hp 2 stroke on my
11' whaler. It is a 2007 and just won't plane out with
3 people and cooler. The motor is a 25hp 4 stroke and
it weighs a ton. The plack on my boat
says max hp 25. It seems odd that the 13' is rated for
a 40 and its just 2 ft longer.
Thanks for your opinion.

Reduce pitch on the propeller

The pitch on the 25hp is already 9 and I can't find another that is less.

Mercury makes a 10" x 8," part # 48-896890A10 that might help a bit.

Solas also makes some good four blade aluminum props that carry a load well.

Not that I'm a big fan of hydrofoils, but Boston Whaler was adding a Stingray Jr. hydrofoil as standard equipment on their 2008 11' models. Does yours have one?

A 25 should push an 11' Whaler no problem. I vote for something other than the prop. Throttle linkage not opening completely, for example. Or maybe the fuel tank vent is closed and it's sucking a vacuum.

I can't believe a new 25 hp wouldn't be more than plenty of power.

I dunno. The 4-strokes can be real dogs out of hole when the boat is loaded. Three people and a cooler is a lot of weight for a 25hp 4-stroke, IMHO.

Not getting personal, but what size people are we working with here? And the cooler? Is the load even fore/aft?

I get better holeshot with my 25hp 4 stroke than I did with my 30hp 2 stroke. An 11' Whaler should fly with a 25. I'm doing in the low 30's according to my gps with my 13'.

Folks, we are talking about a 2007 Sport 110 not a classic Sport 11.

BIG difference.

Still, something is amiss. They offer this boat with a 15 HP motor too.

Whaler's Performance Data Sheet indicates this boat will do 26 MPH with two aboard using the 9 3/4” x 9 1/2” Black Max propeller.

I still think it is quite conceivable that a 110 Sport w/ 25hp 4S will not plane with 3 adults and a cooler. In the Boston Whaler test, the boat took 8.6 seconds to get on plane with 2 adults and no cooler. Besides, if you put 3 full-size adults and a cooler in my 130 Sport, it will get on plane, but it will struggle to do it.

Tom,
You mentioned it was a later 11' Sport, not a classic. What is the big difference? Weight? My 1987 11' standard does very well with wife, cooler, myself and 85lb. Lab. Not much room though. Only on calm water! I replaced the old 15hp Mariner with a 15hp 4 stroke last year and actually have better performance with the new one. I do put the 12gal tank forward.

The new ones weight 460#'s the classics were listed at 250#. With the classics, the 11' and 13' whaler had similar top speeds with the same HP motor. It sort sound like the same hold true for the new small whaler sports.

I have read about some having problems planning the new 130 with 40hp as well.

I own a 2006 BW 110 Sport with a Mercury Bigfoot 25 four strokes. I installed a hydrofoil and it helps a lot to plane with 3 adults. Furthermore, I replaced the original propeller with one with higher pitch to get a WOT RPM of 5800 instead of 6100 (almost over rev with the original propeller with one passenger). The ride at WOT is quitter and 1 or 2 knots faster.
