Shaft Length for a 1974 13'..?

I have a 1974 (full transom) 13' Sport hull. I have an opportunity to purchase a decent used 1996 C40 (40hp) Yamaha that the guy thinks is a 25" shaft.
Will a 25" shaft motor work on a 13'? What I mean is, what is the factory recommendation? I assume a jack plate could make it work, but I'd rather not go that route.

I doubt it is a 25" engine. If it was close to you I would go and measure it. I would not buy it if it is a 25" shaft. A lot of people selling used engines don't even know what shaft lenth they have. I just bought a 40 hp tohatsu that sat in his garage for 14 years that never was mounted on a boat and he advertized it as a short shaft but by looking at the photo of it I was sure it looked like a long shaft. I went and measured it and sure enough it was a long shaft. More than once on ebay or craigslist I have seen long shaft engines mounted on a 13' whaler with the short transom. What a surprise when the new owner takes it for the first ride. Go measure the engine for yourself to be sure. Good luck.

After looking at the Photo of a C 40 Yamaha mounted on a pontoon boat for sale I have to admit It could be a 25" shaft. Tohatsu made a lot smaller engines for overseas markets with 22" and 25" shafts. Evinrude makes a 65 hp E-tec engine with a 22" shaft that they sell in Canada. I would still check it out and take a measurement of a long shaft engine to compare it with. Sometimes it ain't what you don't know that hurts you, it's what you know that just ain't so. Good luck.

Tom -- this is the engine on craigslist. this might be the one you were looking at..? it looks at least a 20" to me. but, yes, i do need to measure it to find out. trouble is, he's about 2 hours from me...

Yes I did see it on craigslist. You might ask him to measure it before you drive out there and then check it yourself. Yamaha made a line of bare bones engines that did not even have oil injection. The C series does not have oil injection. they made a C 85 which was basicly a 90 and did not have oil injection. Like I was saying it could even be between 20" and 25" shaft lenth so be carefull how you measure it.

Cool. Will do. So, what is the Boston Whaler factory approved shaft length for a full-transom (post-1972?) 13' hull? Is it 20"..?

One last follow-up to my original question (for anyone who cares besides me!):
Per a Yamaha Outboard forum (and confirmed by a Yamaha certified mechanic, the "L" in the model #, C40PLRU, represents a "long" or 20" shaft. If they made a 25" shaft for this horsepower, the model # would have been C40PXRU, where the "X" represents "extra long". And now you know... the rest of the story 
So, I'm going to go see if this motor is worth the mnoey!

These seem to be fairly standard among the manufacturers.
L = 20"
X = 25"
XX = 30"
Where XX means "Extra Extra Long"

A quick update: I purchased a 1996 Yamaha 40 hp (model: C40PLRU) for my 13' Sport. I went to look at it Saturday and after running it through its paces, checking compression (135psi in both cylinders), and the owner (who is a certified Yamaha mechanic) throwing in 5-gal of Yamalub oil, I carried it (and the side-mount controls) home. I'm pretty stoked. I didn't think I'd find what I was looking for this season, so it looks like I should be able to get it back on the water soon.
Now, I just need to get it mounted and rigged.
