"It was a contradiction in terms that caught on."

Just a bit of Whaler trivia.

Anyone know what was "a contradiction in terms that caught on" and who said it?

Dick Fisher said it in response to the name Boston Whaler as there were never any whaling fleets in Boston Harbor

It took me all day to figure it out. It hit while out raking up the yard and I had to come in and see if I was right. At first I though it might have been Mills when talking to Fisher about the original outrage but that did not seem right.

Good one Jeff!

Quoting from a story by Marty Luray published January 1978 in Motorboat Magazine -

Dick Fisher - "We didn't feel that a straight name was what we wanted. We decided to use an unstraight name that everyone would remember. We decided that 'Whaler' was good, but Boston was not a place that was known for whalers. So we called it Boston Whaler. It was a contradiction in terms that caught on."
