Hey guys. Thanks for all the help so far with my project. I hope to have the epiglass done on the hull this weekend but I am also chipping away at getting the motor all ready as I can. My current issue is the trim motor. When boat was purchased it would trim up and down but on the up stroke it was definately struggling and you could hear almost like a sucking sound. I assumed that the seals in the res were bad so I bought the kit. I was going to trim the motor up to get at the trim assembly and it will no longer trim up, even when giving it a bit of assistance while pushing the trim motor. You can hear the whir of the trim motor and all and it will trim DOWN but nothing in up. My 2 questions are: Would my diagnosis about the seals sound to be a good place to start? And does anyone have any pointers on removing the trim assembly itself to work on it? It is a 94 Johnson 48 spl. I have manually released the trim and can pull the motor up so it doesn't seem to be a frozen "push rod". Thanks in advance!
So I was fooling with it last night and was going to try to get the assembly off and I tilted it up manually, closed the release valve and the motor would not stay up. There was oil at the top of the reservoir so I definately have busted seals. I let it back down and it stopped 3/4 of the way down and wouldn't go any further. With the release closed, I decided to try the trim button and it brought it down the rest of the way. For giggles I tried the up button and it worked, bringing the motor all the way up but now it is stuck in the up position and the manual release will not bring it back down. Frustrating.
