I am trying to find out what would be fair compression for an 1985 90 hp yamaha.I have lower unit issues and i need to figure out which way to go. right now I have 125-120-125 what do you think?

Right on the mark. There is tolerance allowed so don’t worry about the 120.

I can’t see where you’re from but being from salt and brackish waters myself I would say corrosion. Also deteriorated wiring. Other than that I would weight the cost of new or newer against the repair. look around for boats with newer motors for sell and see how cheap you could buy a rig to part out. I would think the repair is still going to be cheaper

There is a 2005 lower unit on Mobile, AL craigslist today for 400! The ad says it has 2 hrs on it and the guy is selling because he replaced it with a jet foot. I don't know how a 2005 could have only 2 hrs on it, but that is what the ad says.

Do you need to be concerned with the shift rod on this engine? I know it was a problem of the larger units.
