Was planning on putting a Yamaha 30 on the pre 71 13' Whaler but I found a fantastic deal on a 1997 50 Johnson with trim/tilt. It's a 20" shaft which is what I need. I know it will be plenty fast enough, just worried a little about the weight. I can't find anywhere that lists the weight. Model J50TSLECC.
Any input?

Do you have a built up transom or a Kentfab transadapter? The pre '71 13's had a 15" transom so a short shaft motor is required.
If your transom is built up, I don't see a problem with a 50. Guys do it all the time.

Cliff,
This is a TIP for everyone.
Click on his "Personal Website" link under his name at the left of their post.
Here is an example and just like the Personal Page link:

Thanks Joe, but we shouldn't have to search his info if he's asking for advice on a 20" shaft motor for a pre '71 13' that we all know has a 15" transom. That's why I asked the question, there was no description of what he had in his write up.
Thanks for pointing that out though.

True.
I questioned that myself but he said "It's a 20" shaft which is what I need."
To verify that, I went to his Personal Website to see what he had.
Yes, it would have been clearer if he would have stated he had the transom filler then we would have known for certain.
WhalerCentral cannot recommend exceeding the max hp rating of the boat which is 40hp for remote steering.
If you are going to overpower, check with your insurance company if you do indeed plan on having insurance.

sorry, I thought I was clear in that I need a 20" shaft, because there is an aluminum bracket on the transom converting it from 15 to 20". Any feedback on performance, weight etc????

No problem DP. I just didn't want to read that you bought a 20" shaft motor only to post up a week later asking why there's so much spray coming back intothe boat when you're on a plane.
I'm not sure of the weight of that engine. You've probably done this but in case you haven't, have you done a Google search for the weight?? Also sometimes I venture over to the iBoats.com forum and ask technical questions there too. There's a guy here in North Texas that's running a 50hp Johnson on his pre-71 13' BW. That thing really scoots along nicely too and it doesn't appear he's having weight issues. I haven't talked to him lately though.
Good luck and post up your results. Wish I could have been more help to ya.

The EC in your model number indicates a '98 model year (not '97). And according to NADA. the weight of this engine is 190 lbs. They don't list trim/tilt on that model in their description oddly, so it's difficult to tell if that's included in their weight and is just an oversight. But either way it gets you in the ballpark at least.

Don't think thats the model, that lists 4 cylinders, mine has 2. It said manufactured in 97, I guess it could be a 98' model year. I have a hard time thinking it's 190lbs though. I did google it and could not find a weight.

Just weigh it on a regular scale and find out for yourself.

thanks DK, that looks like it. Soooooo, after all of this discussion, what does everyone think about the weight? Is it an issue? I have the battery and fuel tank under the seat.
BTW DK, I work for a company based in Everett on HWY 99

For a short shaft 50 h.p. 2 cylinder 2 stroke, the weight is not a problem. I have a similar setup so see my personal page. What I have to wonder is whether your modified transom will be strong enough to handle that motor. Do you have a photo you can post?

He has photos on his personal website. Looks pretty stout and should hold it just fine.
