Anyone have a 17 montauk, 90's Verison, that place side mount rod holders. Directly to the boat.
I notice it's not a straight angle, inside of the boat to place a side mount rod holder, from the console to the back of the boat.
Anyone have pictures of their modifications?

deff808, go to the OEM part Photos index, page 7 and see if that info helps you. Think you be able to find someone who's making the replacements now.

Scotty makes a variety of Rod holders. I use rail mounted ones which are plastic and stainless steel. Here's there website, you can look around it to see if there's any thing you like.

deff808,
when you say side mounted, are you talking about rail mounted rod holders or gunnel mounted? As far as I know the Montauk only had the rod holders in the RPS and rod holder in the cushions for the cooler seat. Any other ones on the boat were rail mounted, probably Lee's. Lee's no longer makes the clamp on ones, but do make a very nice rail mounted set that works well for fishing and trolling.

This is what i currently did/mod, 5 rod holders in the back

Looking for this item

But a little heavier duty. I feel that if a big strike or the weight of a reel/rod, like a 50W, might not be strong enough.
Wanted to place this on the side gunnels. Which i could mount a flush rod holder.

Something like that. I just can't see myself spending $100 for a 9" metal.

If you mount a rodholder like in your photo to the side of your whaler it will tear right out with even a moderate drag setting from a 50 class reel. There is no wood backing behind the glass on the side of the boat. The rod acts like a lever and you will lose your rod too.

you can go with the west marine version

Tom is correct, there is no wood backing so for the stability and safety of your rods, I would suggest a rail mount version. If you don't like the Lee's, West Marine has a version

Thats to bad, thats the answer i was looking for as well. Of the no wood backing.
I do have rails, from front and back, with 4 rail rod holders. I already went to three rail rod holders, that fail on me.

I have had that problem where the rail mount rod holder spun around toward the water and almost lost the rod. Some rail mount rod holders can be adjusted so you can mount them on the vertical (up and down part ) part of your side rails. I have some gold taco rail mounted holders and also some vintage lee rail mounted holders that I use that would probably hold up to the kind of punishment you will be putting them through.
Another cheaper option would be to mount a pipe to the vertical part of your side rails with good stainless hose clamps. And always use safety ropes incase the rod holders fail. Shaka.
