I am looking at purchasing a Mercury engine with the following specifications :
Year of Manufacture : Feb 2007
HP : 50
Moadel # :50ELHPTO
Serial # : I have to get that
Weight : 204 lbs
Tiller Handle Model
Working on carbs
Automatic oiler/premixer
Mercury has this engine for export only . I am based in Barbados.
Some questions that I need answers to
1. Are there any particular issues with this engine. I understand that it is sold in USA as the Mercury Classic (not for sale in Cal).
2. The engine was used for approximately 20-30 hrs since purchase in 2007. Looks almost new except for some scatches on the cowl. Are there any maintenance items I should look for before using ?
3. Can this engine be used on a 1986 17ft Boston Classic Whaler ? I am not looking for speed records but s safe reliable engine cause if the engine fails next land stop is 100 miles away on the Caribbean side and on the Altantic side it is 3000 plus miles away !!!!
4. I know that there is a big debate over 4 stroke vs 2 stroke and from look at the specificatioon for the Mercury vs my 4 stroke 2001 70 Hp evinrude the specication are petty close for example I have place some of the speciccation below for your review
Evinrude 4 stroke 70 HP specication - same as Suz 70hp
Weight :342 lbs
HP: 70
Amps Supplied : 15A
CC: 1200 (I think)
KW :52Kw vs Mercury output of 50Kw
So form my little knowlege I was saying that althought the Mercury is much smaller in terms of the HP I find that it displacement is lower, the overall weight is lower by 130lbs at the stern so I suspect that I should get approximately the same speed. What are your views on the matter. I have the cheque in my hand to pay the guy because good engines are extremely hard to find in Barbados. Awaiting your comments.
