I found a good condition late 80's Johnson 40 long shaft and was considering putting it on my 13 restoration project. I know it is plenty of hp, was looking for info on how this motor might hold up being 20+ years old. Anything in particular about this motor to be concerned with?

Pompano Beach? Man, I grew up there......and graduated High School from PBHS. Lol, small world.

It all depends on the condition of the Johnson. Being in South Florida, I know it's been used in a lot of salt water so I'd certainly look for corrosion. Also, do a compression check on the cylinders and also check out the lower unit oil to make sure it's not contaminated with water. There's lots of fishing line in those waters of yours and the line can tear up a lower unit shaft seal in a heartbeat.

What year is your Whaler? If the Whaler is 1972 or newer, you will have a 20 inch transom. If the boat is older than that, your transom is 15 inches and you'll need a short shaft (15 inch) motor.

motor is not in S Fl, is a freshwater motor so should be minimal corrosion. My hull is pre 71 but has an aluminum cap on transom making it 20"

sat idle for awhile but I'm back at it, rolled and tipped 4 coats of Awlgrip last week. Rub rail on this weekend, Pettit Vivid in a week or two and Ultratuff on the nonskid after that. Buying the mahogany in a couple of week, so I'm hopeful it will be back together in a month or so. Would love to post some pics on this site but i find it too cumbersome to bother with, too bad.

If photos here are too difficult here, then you can put one link to your photobucket album if you have one.
Or is photobucket too cumbersome to bother with too?

We try and make it easy for everyone to display a link to their photos here.
1. A link to your photobucket album
2. A link to your personal page here on WhalerCentral

Many people don't want to deal with photobucket or other outside sources so that is one reason we have the personal page section.

I put a link to my photobucket album when I started a thread on the restoration. Maybe I wasn't clear, I think threads are much better if the pics are in the threads instead of having to follow links. Just my opinion, I know why you do it the way you do.

I didn't see a thread by you about restoration but I did find one on "How far up to move console on 13?" and found a link to your album.

You can also put that link in your profile and it will show up under your name on the left of the forum window.
I added this link to your profile so you can see how it works. If you don't want it there you can remove the link by going to your profile.

Members can also submit a completed Article or Restoration project to us and we can post it for them.
Here are some members that have submitted their projects.

Hope this helps.

Nice mock-up of the SS interior with the seat clamps you got from me.
