I am about to put a 2010 Yamaha 25HP 2-stroke on 1974 13 footer. The motor is new from a dealer in FL that is closing out the last of the Yamaha 2-strokes on www.boats.net for under $2500. Does anyone have this actual setup? Is this enough power? This is a kids boat and needs to run comfortably at 25 mph or so and pull a tube or knee board occasionally. The 35 evinrude coming off was adequate.

I think all of us are going through these calculations.
4 stroke = quiet, easy start, efficient and heavy.
2 stroke = louder, lighter, cheaper.

A friend has a Yamaha 40 4-stroke, which is an outstanding motor, but too heavy for that boat in my opinion.

Anyone with actual experience?

You should be good with this. I saw the same deal and was going to pull the trigger on it, but I saw that it had to be shipped to a Yamaha dealer first.

I came across an older 25hp Johnson instead.

A properly set up 25hp motor on 13' should do 25mph+ I don't have any direct experience knee board/tubing behind 13' whaler, but it should work for towing the kids. As a kid, I knee boarded behind a 25hp motor.

I do not have the exact setup, however I have a 1994 25hp 2-stroke Merc on my 72 13footer. It planes very well and cruises fine (hole shot could be better, it may be my setup??). I have the the black stingray fins on the plate above the prop. We have pulled my 16/now 17 year old son on an inflatable (not a tube) and had a great time doing it {you can see thing on my avatar picture}. We plan to change to a 52inch tube this year, and I'm sure it'll do just fine.
I've done 25-26mph by GPS with two adults on a local lake with no problem.

I have a 25 yamaha 2-stroke manual start 15" shaft on a 1971 standard hull with no bottom paint. It goes 24 knots on the handheld gps, about 28 mph. It is tiller steering and is scary to drive at full throttle. the boat handles great at slower planning speeds because the engine only weighs about 112 lbs and there is no battery to weigh the stern down. I would think it could pull small kids tubing and maybee skiing.

I looked up boats.net and yes $2495 is a good deal for that engine but Im pretty sure the engine does not come with the control or the harness.
Two years ago I bought two 25 hp short shaft yamaha's. One was manual start tiller and the other was manual and electric start tiller. I converted the electric start one to remote control with a kit that lets you hook up control cables to it. The motor they are selling is rigged for control cables but you need to buy the controls and wiring harness.
Check with them as the controls and harness could be expensive.

Thanks for the input....I just installed a new 25 hp Yamaha 2 stroke on my son's 13 whaler. We are thrilled with the setup. Motor weighs 112 pounds runs 27 mph with 330 pounds of people plus fishing gear, cooler, etc. This is slightly faster than the 1978 35 Evinrude it replaced. I wanted a 4 stroke 40 for the quiet operation and fuel injection, but in my opinion, at 180-220 pounds, the 4 strokes are too heavy for this boat. They make the stern sit so low that water swamps the transom when you stop and raise the bow so high that the hull slaps. Paid $2497 for the motor from Central FL Yamaha + $320 for installation + $340 for control and 2 cables. The motor is very quiet and uses a 100:1 oil mix, which is almost smokeless. The 30 Etec at 156 pounds also might be a good fit, but I could not find one at a comparable price.

Glad you like the set-up. Im sure others on this site would like to get that deal. What is the procedure for ordering the engine? Did you have to have it shipped to a dealer near you and have them install it ? I thought it would have been much more money for the controls etc. I wish they still had some short shaft models left , I would jump one one.

I wanted to just pick up the motor and install it, but they said Yamaha requires a dealer to install, unless its a tiller motor. I live a couple hours from the place, so I just drug the boat down to them. I saw the same motor new on ebay, but didn't investigate. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha...iesQ5fGear
