Here is a chance for everyone to weigh in with their favorites. I expect to repower this old charmer and want to look at all reasonable options. Top speed for an old geezer is not important, the journey is! Please contribute; 4 stroke vs 2 stroke; 140 vs 150/+ (she currently is powered by a 1978 Johnson 200); hole-shot doesn't mean a thing to me; economy counts; reliability counts; warranty counts. I know that 3/31 is the magic date for "gimmee 6 and 5". No jackplates, just the transom.
Also, plan to get a kicker. Earlier threads indicate the Yam T8 suits the bill. Any updates. Thanks in advance for your input.
I am not a fan of 4 stroke motors. I'm sure you will get a lot of opinions...
I believe someone on this forum has installed a 150hp E-Tec on the same model you have and he says it works fine for him. 7 year warranty is very nice....
For the same weight as the 150 E-Tec, I would consider the 175 or 200 hp. The 150, 175, and the 200 hp weigh in at 427 lbs. The 175 or 200 motor would not have to work as hard as the 150. There a many ideas on fuel economy between the difference in hp sizes. The smaller engine may get better fuel economy on a smaller boats but when it has to work harder pushing a larger boat, the fuel economy drops off about as equal as running a larger engine that isn't working very hard....
I would have to agree with Joe all the way...If dollars are not a huge factor in the decision I would opt for the 200hp E-Tec since it has the same weight as the 150. There is a gentleman who myself and others here boat with that has a 200 Yamaha 2 Stroke on his 21' banana hull outrage and loves it. I do see you live in Florida though. The E-tecs seemed to be making there way into the market down there but it was very heavily Yamaha country down there.
All in all if it was me I would look and an E-Tec for the repower. If not an E-Tec at least another 2 stroke and not a 4.

Personally I would stick to either the 175 or 200 e-tec. Light weight, good HP when you need it. Just because you have 200HP on the back, doesn't mean you have to push that throttle forward, just means when you do the engine will respond.
Sorry to butt in here. Being a big beliver in not underpowering, I was wondering what kind of top end and cruise speed your friend might get with a 200 on a bananna hull? I have a '90 Johnson GT 200 on a 79 outrage. Top end with 1/2 tank and 3 kids (light load) is 50.2mph at 5900 rpm and cruise at 4000 rpm is 34mph. Times are GPS. Any idea if this is in line for a 200 (still has good compression etc.). Running a cupped 14.5 x17 OEM prop. All opionins welcomed.
