The "Vernatherm" is the wax filled "thermal actuator" portion of the thermostat assembly. Looks like a little metal pellet with a plunger on one end. The wax heats and expands to move the plunger.

Vernathern (with an "N") is a typo in the Evinrude literature. It's supposed to be Vernatherm.
