Today will be a day I spend with close friends and family. I'll silently reflect on the events of the past and contemplate the future.

My pal Marley and I spent 8 days at ground zero starting about 22 hours after the first plane struck the WTC. Marley has since passed away and I miss her dearly.

We go to the little fire house around the block from our house for the 9/11 memorial service, the spot light goes on at dusk from ground zero in Manhattan. You can see it straight out my front door. I remember it being so surreal watching the huge smoke plume far away on that day. Early on the morning of 9/12 I was driving to work, the normally empty Long Island Rail Road stations parking lots were still full of many cars that were all fogged over from the night before, they belonged to the people that NEVER made it home that night, then the names came trickling in of all people that you know. On my block we lost a 22 yr old kid who just got on FDNY, and we lost a "Port Authority" Policeman, I never knew his name but, he always said "Hello" when ever he walked passed my house. We in NY ARE SO PROUD and THANKFUL for the way all of "AMERICA" came to our aid. When the $%#* hit's the fan, you know who your friend's are !

Never forget those precious lives we lost on that brutal attack on our soil.

It's also my 23rd wedding anniversary so I do have something to celebrate.

I get a bit choked up remembering the day because I worked at the Port Authority of NY and NJ (PANYNJ) for 12 years before leaving for a job closer to home in December 2000. I would have been in the north tower, and I knew a lot of PANYNJ coworkers that didn't make it.
I also get pretty p.o.'d watching how politics and pc have diminished the clarity that everyone had the day after in remembering what is important.

Please never forget that day, and never shy away from being proud of our great nation and showing it!

May God bless the families and souls of victims of the 2/26/93 and 9/11/01 cowardly terrorist attacks and those that have fought and died for us.

p.s.

Johnny, Thank you and Marley for your service, and
Happy Anniversary, Duane. I guess 9/11 is not all bitter for you.

I was there and saw the second plane hit and watched as the buildings came down. For the next six months I worked on the recovery efforts. I found things that still haunt me and at times, wake me in the night. The death toll continues to rise as fellow responders fall prey to different diseases. The buildings fell many years ago, but the effects are still lingering.

So much changed on 9/11. My friend Pat, a NYFD captain died. He also responded to the attack in 1993. One day at lunch Pat, myself and two other friends talked about it, and Pat thought it would happen again. He was most concerned with the Subway's. Evidently, before going into the towers, someone said, Pat maybe you should go in there, and Pat replied, "Are you crazy?"

The politics really gets me mad too. We all know what the deal is, but it's not PC to say.
