Mostly about Hunt but does discuss his Whaler involvement.

Great article about Ray Hunt. I had read that when Hunt and Fisher first tested the first prototype 13 footer on long Island Sound in 1957 it was such a rough riding boat that Hunt decided to build a hook into the bottom on the mold for the production boats scheduled for first production in 1958, and never tested the results of the hooked bottom, and as a result the boat lives with that for better or worse. I always wondered if they could have redesigned the bottom and done better. Another thing I noticed in the bow on photo of the smirked 13 footer in the article that I never noticed before are the two lifting strakes on the center V hull. My unsmirked `61 hull doesn`t have these and also has more of a pronounced keel.

Great article. Thanks for posting it. You guys may enjoy www.bertram31.com to see more about Ray Hunt. It is a great site with lots of good boat stuff. Two best boats ever build are the 13' Whaler and the 31' Bertram.

Glad you guys enjoyed it. Learning about how it all came together, the balsa wood pram idea, foam Salifish, then the 13' prototype provide a great glimpse into how things got started back in the early days.
