Hi...I'm pretty new at this and need some advice re: 1989 Montauk 17 w/ 1989 Johnson 90 VRO. I have the boat and engine running and looking like new. I get 40.7 mph @ 5200 rpm (just for sea trial, I usually run 24mph @ 3000). Current prop is 13d x 19p alum. I have an opportunity to get an SST 13 x 19 13 spline at a good price. I'm told it's a more efficient prop. Problem is my boat is in Panama City Beach FL and I'm in Marietta, GA...can't count the splines right now. Is my prop shaft 13 spline? Thanks, Ralph
Yes, the old 13" x 19" SST has the correct spline count for your motor.
No, you will probably do better with a 13-1/4" x 17" SST or a 13-7/8" x 17" SST or Viper instead.
The 13-1/4" x 15" Stiletto Advantage would also be an excellent choice.
Be sure your motor is mounted one hole on the transom if using the SST/SSP/Viper and two holes up if using the Stiletto Advantage. You top speed should increase by at least 2 MPH.
Tom...thanks a lot for the detailed reply. I was beginning to think no one knew much about the topic as I had no other responses...for sure you do. There seems to be more to this prop selection than meets the eye. I thought I would need a lower pitch than 19 because I struggle to reach 5100 rpm (hopefully my new tach is accurate) at top speed (40 mph) and I believe specs call for around 53 or 5400 rpm. So it makes sense to go with a 17 pitch. I don't think my current 13 x 19 aluminum prop is hurting anything because the engine sounds great in all ranges and I never take it to the top...I'm very happy at 3000 rpm and around 23 mph. Thanks again, Ralph
