Hi I just bought a 2002 130 sport with a 40 Mercury 2 stroke. It still has the aluminum factory prop that has seen better days and I'm wanting to just go ahead and buy a SS prop for it. There is a sticker on the top of the lower unit that shows the gear ratio of 2:1 and a prop size of 13 x 26. Is that the max that can fit on the motor or the recommended one for the boat/motor combo? What size props are others with this set-up running?

See this thread for more detail about the same boat and motor.

We need to know the prop you have now and your WOT RPM's.

Doh!! I've never seen an OB that posted the R/P gear teeth count. As far as what I have now and what its turning I haven't even put her in the water yet!! Hope to remedy that tomorrow. As I said the prop that's on it now has quite a few dings and I don't expect much out of it. I actually saw the thread you linked but when I saw 4 stroke I skipped on to the next one. I was looking for a good starting point to begin shopping for a SS replacement and thought there must be a lot of people on here with the exact same boat and 2 stroke 40 HP Merc that would give some input. 99% of the time it will just be my wife and I and a small icechest.

OK i pulled the aluminum prop today. here's the info I got off of it.

Rear: 23

Front: 11 (3B or 3/8) X (14*or14P) then in another place there is a box with either 4F or AF inside it

Along the side b/w 2 blades 48 8187867(0 or 8)6A40 14P

I couldn't be sure of the numbers inside the parenthesis.

I measured the diameter of the blades and its 10" almost exact.

So does 10 x 14 sound right for this boat and motor combo? It rained here nearly all day. I'm going to try to splash her tomorrow and see what kind of numbers I get.

It sounds more like 11 3/8" x 14 pitch to me....

Basically you are running a 14 pitch aluminum prop.
Forget about diameter as we have no choice in diameter, we only can buy a prop by the pitch or brand.

Also see this thread about pitch ONLY...

I am not sure what brand you have but maybe others can tell you.
Basically it sounds like you want the same size prop but in Stainless instead of Aluminum. Correct?

yes I'm really wanting to get rid of the aluminum one or keep it as a back up only. It has quite a bit of "crescent wrench" cup! and is far from uniform. That's why I don't really think my performance numbers will mean very much at all when changing props. I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to what this POS would spec at now. Thanks for the heads up about the diameter being a moot point. I'm used to inboards and much larger boats so everything is taken into acct. I'm now on the hunt for a CHEAP 14P SS wheel. Thanks again.

Joe is right about prop size. It's all about the rpm's. Forget about how fast you want to go or what you had on your motor.

One thing to keep in mine, all pitches from a different brand or model may have different characteristics.

Meaning, not all 14 pitch props will perform the same due to the aggressiveness or design of the prop. All brands and models of the same brand may perform differently.

OK I managed to get it into the water today before the deluge began. It was rough and as I have said the prop is mangled but it managed to spin up to 52-5400 before I had to back out of it due to water conditions. I'm sure it had more. So I'll start with a 14P SS and go from there. Definitely gotta get one of those Stingray fins as we had to be going at a pretty good clip for the boat to feel settled on plane.
