So I packed up the family and we fueled the boat and headed to the ramp. When we got there my worst nightmare, the boat wouldn't start. I took it home and pulled the plug, put it against the head and there was no spark. Called my local guy who looked at it and said the power pack is bad. My question is am I looking at a big bill? I live in Maine and want to get as much use out of it as I can until the season is over.

I had a sudden failure a few yearss ago. 90 hp Evinrude tried to start... kicked over as I was leaving the boat lift in choppy water... and then died. Had to use my trolling motor to make it back. Too much information..

Long story short... it was an expensive repair. I used a marina in Waterville ME. I believe it cost me $500 +/-

Mike was it the power pack? I took mine to BFC Marine in Woolwich Maine. I always get nervous when it comes to the boat because I don,t know enough about it.

Click on the link below and navigate to your engine in the left hand column, then go to the ignition section to find the power pack and cost from BRP. You can then google the part number and get comparative prices. DIY and save the labor charges....

Drewd, Thanks for the quick response. I saw the part for $68.00, I already dropped the boat off and filled out the work order.

No worries. If that's what the problem part is, the change out is pretty straight forward, so your charges shouldn't be bad if the yard is reasonable.

One thing to check after blowing a power pack is to make sure all your battery connections are tight and check the pos and neg connections on the engine. Your tech may have done it for you, just check with him. A loose connection can cause them to blow. Also, make sure if you have a battery switch, check those connections too. Additionally make sure you never turn the battery switch to off while the engine is running. If your battey switch has a field disconnect, you can switch from batt 1 to batt 2 thru the off position but if it's a plain batt switch, don't do it.

I got the boat back on saturday. They said they checked out everything electrical and it all checked out fine. They trouble shot a little further and found a loose wire. They believe they fixed it. I brought it home hooked it up to the hose and ran it for awhile and it sounded just fine. We have a big day on the water planned for wednesday, I hope all is well.
