Before I go this alone, thought I should consult the wise ones on the board. Here's the issue. After catching 2 king mackerels, 2 tuna, and 5 sharks out of Port Canaveral, we called it quits for the morning and headed for the dock. I have a 2000 17' Montauk and 2000 75hp Mercery (salt water version). Near the dock I had to throttle back in reverse kinda hard because I was coming in a little to fast, at that particular moment my alarm went off (solid beep). I shut it down, put it on the trailer and headed for home. When I flushed it out at home I got the steady alarm again, good water coming from the weep hole.
After sitting in the garage for 2 days, the steady alarm comes on when I turn the key. (engine not started) Reading other posts I believe it could be a bad alarm module, possibly a shorted temp sensor (less likely) or wire harness (even more less likely).
I think that I would first check closely and make sure you don't have a loose wire or connection somewhere. It sounds as if something may have popped out when you throttled back.
The problem turned out to be a stuck magnet inside the oil tank. Had to replace the entire oil tank to fix the false alarm. Dealer informed me that the tanks will leak oil when trimmed up for trailering due to a missing relief plug on the top of the oil tank. I check my old tank when I got home and sure enough, mine was missing.
