I love my 150 optimax! very fuel efficient and works great on the 190 outrage - tops out in the low 40's. They are now offering a 200 hp verado on the same boat. Depending on where you boat that also might work.

The 4 choices I see that are up to current environmental ratings of CARB 3

(In order of lightest weight)

1. E-Tec 150
2. Yamaha 150
3. Honda 150
4. Suzuki 150

If I were to spend $11k to $12k on a new motor, I would want the cleanest environmental rating of CARB 3...

A year after my re-power and I am 110% satisfied with my 2010 115 etec. I swear it seems like I've upgraded to a 130 compared to my old 115 Merc. The boat has significantly greater top speed and jumps on plane instantly even with a good load in the boat.

My year Outrage already sits a bit low in the stern so going to a heavy 4-stroke wasn't a road I wanted to go down.

My only issue with my etec is, its so fuel efficient I worry about how long it takes me to run a tank of E10 through it so I don't have any ethanol problems. I used to be able to burn 30 gallons in a weekend. Now it seems I can get through half that running the same routes.

Now that a problem I bet none of us would mind.

BTW, I like the 150 Optimax, but then again, Mercury is what I'm most familiar with.

Thanks for all the advice and input. As far as my engine i replaced the power head last year. Boat has been running well but a often get a engine alarm when running between 1500-2000 rpm. No idea why.
most recently a bolt securing the alternator broke forcing me to get towed in. Glad i joined Sea-tow. I am probabley jumping the gun with a new engine. It's my first boat and i hate problems but now I Love the boat.

cridge, fyi, I replaced my 1985 150 HP Evinrude (V-6) with a 135 HP Honda (in line 4) in 2004 on my venerable Revenge. The Honda has less kick (takes longer to accelerate), but it is quieter, does not smoke at idle like the old two strokes, and gets about twice the miles per gallon (I used to get 2 to 3 nmpg with the Evinrude, now get 5-6 with the Honda). The 135 Honda is the same basic engine as the 150 HP version, but the 150 gets its extra power from VTEC (Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control). I figured I did not need the extra horsepower or greater purchase price. I have had no issues with the engine since new, so I would certainly recommend Honda to anyone based upon my experience.
