Several years ago, I struck up a conversation with a boat dealer who told me that I might not be able to replace my 90 hp Evinrude (2 cycle) with an equivalent or 100 hp (max hp for Montauk) 4 cycle motor because it would exceed the weight limit for the 82 Montauk.

Is this still the case? Just curious... fortunately, not a problem I am presnetly dealing with.

I had a 1997 Evinrude 90hp that I beleive was about 300 pounds. Most of the current 90hp 4-strokes seem to be around 345-370 pounds. The 90hp etec (2-stroke) is about 320 pounds. The Merc 90hp 4-stroke is something close to a bloated 400 pounds.

I repowered my 17' Outrage with a 115 etec last year and couldnt be happier. Compared to the tired 1990 Merc 115 it had, seems like I've got a 130 on there now. My Outrage is now capable of going faster than any center console it's size really should.

I recall reading some where on the BW site about the older 17 being capable of handling a 330 LB engine...

Still does not give us many options today if we stay by the book...

My personal feeling is 375LB would be my max... and I would need to lighten up the stern if I did it...
