5200 and nylon

Member Posts: 38 Comments: 0 Joined: 04/15/09	I have to bond some nylon oarlock inserts into some aluminum oarlocks and I'm wondering if 5200 will do the trick. Does anyone have any idea if this would work? I know there are not many things that adhere to nylon. I've never used 5200 or any other agent like that so other suggestions are welcome. Many thanks. I've tried to get it to bond to nylon and even starboard with very limited success. The starboard lite Whaler uses for shelving and cabinetry has a better surface for bonding. Member Posts: 38 Comments: 0 Joined: 04/15/09	that's what I figured, I'm just trying to reuse the oarlock sockets because they are the original equipment from the boat. It's more complicated than I can explain now but it would be a LOT easier to re-use these. I'm thinking of tapping two holes in the side of the oar lock socket and putting in two set screws to hold the bushing in place so the 5200 doesn't have to work very hard and can just be there to fill the voids. The problem I see is that the oars have so much leverage on that bushing that I think eventually the set screws will tear the nylon and it will all fall apart.

Are the inserts from the socket maker or ones you have found? They may have been press fit originally? Read recently that some hot glue gun adhesive may work if the nylon insert is scored. If your sockets are easily removable pressing in a bronze bushing may be a solution. If oars are used regularly the sockets/bushings wear.
