Hi everyone-
New to the forum, hoping for advice. I am looking at buying a well kept 1989 Montauk with a 2006 Yamaha 70 2-stroke. Most of the other boats I've looked at in this age range have 90hp outboards on them. Does anyone have experience with this hull powered by a 70? Does this one seem underpowered?
Also, any advice on prop selection for this setup?
Thanks in advance,
Josh

Josh,
I owned a 1978 Montauk for 15 years with a 1985 Evinrude 70 hp on it.
It was fine.
For me, I wouldn't want anything less than a 70 hp on a Montauk.
The boat did around 31 mph top speed.
There are a few times I wish I had a 90 hp but only in smooth water.
Others seem to think 50 or 60 is fine for them.
I guess everyone has there bottom limit...
For me it was the 70 hp........

By chance what do you think the difference in mph from a 70 to a 90 is? I think also it really is up to body of water you will be in am i correct...

I had a 86 with a Johnson 90. It was a good match. The bottom line is, I've never heard anyone say "I wish i had lest HP!!". The MPG difference is very small. The larger the HP the lower the cruising RPM. You sould only be limited by the depth of you wallet and the weight of the engine. You don't always need the HP but it's nice when you want it!!! Shoot for 100 plus!!!

Thanks for the info, everyone.
While this is a nice boat in good condition, I get the feeling that I may want the 90, especially once I get the wife, 2 kids, and dog on board!

Too much Power???????? Didn't know that was possible. I'm thinking about a Blown 455 Buick motor on my 15 Sport CC. Now if I center the motor.............................................Alright can someone help me with prop size?
