A local Mercury dealer has a very clean 1989 Mercury 80hp that he received from a loyal customer wanting to power up to a 115. He offered to give me $500 for my broken Yammie and a good deal on the motor with a 90 day warranty. Has anyone had experience with this motor or similar on an older Montauk? Does it seem like a good match for both power and weight? Thanks.

Hi
Yes i have a 1988 80HP Merc on my Montauk. It is the 3cylinder. Yes the engine has plenty of power for the boat. Mine has been used a lot and been beat up but still has plenty of power, even at 5k elevation. Yes it is clearly a good match of power and weight.
The big question is what kind of deal are you getting? What is the condition of the engine? I have had some bad luck with used Engines. The 40Hp Merc on my old 1973 13 Whaler burned up on me right after i got it. And that was from my dad! But i guess it whould be ok if the price is right. Keep me updated. Joe

Joe,
Thanks so much for your response.
The motor is a 1989. It looks from the outside to be VERY clean. No leaks, corrosion, etc... I am in a bit of a pickle that I had two trips planned for the boat in early August.
The motor was taken in by a local authorized Mercury dealer from a regular customer who wanted to upgrade to a 115. It has supposedly received new plugs, water pump, gear oil, and been spark/compression tested. The dealer is giving me a 90 day parts and labor warranty, which helps my confidence a little.
He is giving me $500 for my busted '85 Yamaha 90 so the net total is $2200 installed with all of the controls and hook up. It seemed like a good deal so I'm going for it.

That sounds pretty fair, I'd go for it (especially w/ the 90-day warranty).

Thanks guys. I appreciate your input. The mechanic has it ready to go, two days faster than he said he would. Looking good so far...
These motors are a crap shoots at this age, I'm fully aware but I'm hoping this old girl will still have some fight in her.
